"Triggered"

That evil  change to the GN's more direct "I did it" shows how far the pschology of the movie's ending has been skewed from the original.

It isn't Adrian, alone, anymore. He isn't himself responsible. He has implicated someone or something else.

Having him say "I did it" would mean that he, alone, is resonsible, and ultimately accountable for the events that unfold.

The film must veer from that idea to avoid the nifty device used by Moore, the author of the GN on which this version of Watchmen is based. I have always felt that the subsequent unravelling of the plot is easier to grasp if the is only one shooter (just like JFK in Dallas).

Having more people and motives muddies the issue considerably. :|

You're all reading too much into it.

Hehe

This is a WATCHMEN board. "Reading too much into it" is, frankly, impossible.

This is what we call a Vynson Complex. Coloured fonts and post deconstructions are coming next.

Maybe we just need to see the film to understand WHY they decided to use "triggered" instead.

Afterall, as a multi-dimensional medium film has its own set of parameters that don't always jibe with the page. I'm not trying to justify this change or excuse it (I'll make up my mind when I see it) but my take is this:

Adrian actually triggers the squid (book) and Jonergy bombs (movie) at 11:25. That IS 35 minutes before Midnight. When Dan and Rorschach are confronting him, the clock is just about to strike Midnight. So, in truth, the squid/bomb hasn't quite yet happened and he did, in fact, just "trigger" it 35 minutes ago.

Nice try, but the thing I always loved about the line is how it separates actions from their effects. To use the example of the Watchmen and Philosophy guy, if Veidt were to choose to save a group of people by letting one die, he "did it" when he switched the tracks, not when the train hits after. The (very similar) line in V for Vendetta implied the same thing. And it ties in Dr Manhattan's view of time, I feel.

But "triggered" makes it too clear that there's a delay and removes a layer of meaning. And like Soupdragon said, it doesn't put full responsibility on Veidt. It sounds more like "I played my part". Add to that the feeling of helplessness it gives Dan, Rorschach and the reader. What is "done" cannot be undone.

As for why it was changed, well maybe it's the nature of the SQuID bombs? Maybe that's just how you...talk about them. You don't detonate them, you trigger them? Perhaps the line makes more sense in the context of the new ending. We'll see...

With all the news today about whats NOT in the movie, dare I ask does this so calleed "adaptation" have anything to do with the orginal GN at all anymore?

Seriously? For every item changed from the GN, there are 25 other items left 100% intact. Let's not overreact now.

Watchmaker wrote:
So how exactly was the My Chemical Romance Desolation Row cover utilized? Is it the first thing we hear at the start of the credits?

Right after the shot of the journal in the crank file.

Dog Carcass wrote:
When did they use "Sound of Silence" and "All Along the Watchtower" and "Ride of the Valkyries?"
Does Rorschach slay the German shepherds?

"Sound of Silence" - Comedian's Funeral
"All Along the Watchtower" - Nite Owl and Rorschach's final approach to Karnak
"Ride of the Valkyries" - 50 foot tall Dr. Manhattan in Vietnam

Yes, he kills the dogs and tosses them through the window.

Dog Carcass wrote:
DID YOU LIKE IT?

Yes.

drdr47 wrote:

Didn't see any.

Rorsach wrote:
Obviously the biggest question of the thread: Rorschach's death... handled well?

Very well.

vdtdcutd5145 wrote:
How was the Cold War tension dealt with in the film?

Constantly referred to. Done well.

The Guard wrote:
Who says "Nothing ever ends". Jon or Laurie?

Laurie does, but she's quoting the Doc.

Project862006 wrote:
how was Rorschach Back story and how brutal was it?

Perfect. Brutal.

Too-Ticky wrote:
Did the movie feel fast paced or energetic, or did it move at a more leisurely pace?

Pretty leisurely paced.

Does Adrian at least scream or say "I DID IT!" after seeing the TVs/News reports?

Much obliged, DDC. Sure, the forum masses may be reeling from certain news, but we still appreciate it all the same! We just hope you had a great experience viewing the film, and look forward to your non-embargo review. I, for one, hope to see lots of fanboy gushing. :)

No. But they are heavily playing the angle that Adrian is very upset about the innocent lives lost - a necessary evil of his plan. It would have been weird for him to do an endzone dance in that scene and have it make sense.
