Second time I watch it, I will still abide by my rule "Pixar Or Foreigner", but this was pretty good.

I didn't like that Twilight Zone episode, it felt a bit too anticlimatic to me. The short story is very good, though. The movie is okay but pretty disappointing considering the source material and the director. Definitely better than Southland Tales, but nowhere near as good as Donnie Darko.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: What the fuck is so good about Donnie Darko? I couldn't make heads or tales of it, although my boyfriend says it makes perfect sense if you're stoned when you watch it...

That's how you watch it, the only way for it to make that much sense (it really does work too, I know because my friend and I did it).

It actually does make sense without the use of inhalants. I know because I've seen it several times (both cuts of the movie), went through the interactive website, bought and read the Donnie Darko book, and researched the movie a bunch.

I doubt it's worth all of this effort unless of course you actually like it.

Edit: I was astounded, however, when a friend of a friend watched my copy of the Director's Cut and actually seemed to understand it the first time.

Oh I understood it when I first saw it (not on drugs at the time). The being stoned part adds some other thing to it. Not really sure how to describe, but you kind of understand it better.

I thought Donnie Darko was pretty bad. I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

DONNIE DARKO isn't that complex or hard to understand. Many of the references are obvious (Harvey, Alice in Wonderland, etc). It's just a little weird. The "twist" at the end is, in my opinion, the best part of it, but everything leading up to that is a bit arbitrary and contrived. It's an okay movie, and the cast is good, but I've never considered it anything but a good movie.

For me, the cool thing about Donnie Darko is not the sci-fi or time travel aspect of it. I mean, that's awesome and I think it's employed really well. But more than anything that I really cared about the characters. And I wouldn't call it arbitrary or contrived, in fact, I think it's one of those very few films where every single thread was important. The disappointing aspects of Southland Tales and to a certain degree, The Box, is that Richard Kelly hasn't managed to create the same compelling quality to the character. Of course, you could blame the performances, funny how the then more or less unknown cast of Donnie Darko managed to create far more interesting characters than the superstars (The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cameron Diaz) he has gotten into his films now.

The first time I saw it, I knew that I would have a hard time understanding it. I'd just heard it's that kind of movie and I decided to see it the same way I see David Lynch films: Just go along for the ride.

And I loved it. I thought the story was great, quite a roller coaster of emotions at times. It's very hard to have elements of horror, suspense, romance and sci-fi in your films and still manage to get it into a cohesive whole and Donnie Darko perfectly achieves that.

The cast and the characters are great. I really felt for them and believed in them.

There is also the great soundtrack, the direction by Richard Kelly is solid, the cinematography has moments of great beauty.

It's one of my favorite films and I think I've gotten to understand it pretty well now, but I also love it becuase even upon repeat viewings, I keep uncovering new layers of it. And I don't drink or take drugs, so I seriously doubt you'd need them in order to understand the film.

It's too bad I cannot really say the same for Southland Tales or The Box, although the latter isn't so bad.

I loved Donnie Darko but I haven't seen Southland Tales. I heard it wasn't good but maybe I should see it eventually. Sometime. Before I die. I saw The Box but I thought it was pretty "meh".

I also refuse to see S. Darko seeing as how none of the people, except for the actress, who worked on the first one have anything to do with it.

I call non-canon.

I wouldn't call Southland Tales as bad as Manos: The Hands of Fate, it's an interesting watch, but the problem is that it simply doesn't really have anything good to it. Except maybe a few scenes and the score by Moby. Also Justin Timberlake, Seann William Scott and some of the supporting players aren't so bad.

I also absolutely refuse to EVER see S. Darko.

Oh yeah, I'm never setting my eyes on S. Darko. To think, people complain about My Chemical Romance covering a Bob Dylan song...

It's like saying... oh yeah scabies isn't as bad as AIDS.
Southland Tales is just like... I can't even describe it. I feel like it is bad.

Just look at the cast.
Or this.

And I like Donnie Darko. It's a bit overrated and I don't climax over it or anything... but it's very good.

I actually like that scene a lot. :?
I don't think the movie has any scenes that are particularly groan inducing to me, it's just that as a whole, it's a complete freaking mess.
But I find it an interesting watch overall. I doubt I will see it in its entirety again, but I own it and there are scenes I like to watch from time to time, but as a whole, the movie feels like a collection of deleted scenes from an entirely different movie. One that actually makes sense.

Firstly, I really like Donnie Darko and definitely refuse to watch S. Darko.

Secondly

I just got back from an advance screening of Paranormal Activity in the UK and absolutely loved it. I think the empathy you feel for the characters is partly why it works, but it was also a really great audience and just a fantastic piece of entertainment. And yes... I was scared. My mouth kept drying out in the night scenes so I would drink during the day scenes, but it was good because every time the night came round you could feel the buzz in the audience. I feel like I really have "experienced" Paranormal Activity.

8.5/10

I know people are saying it is overrated or isn't good second time round, but I had read nothing about the scares themselves and just went along, and first time seeing it I absolutely loved it.

Yeah I watched that with my friends after I bought it on DVD at an anime/comics convention. It was really good.

I never got around to seeing the sequel though.

Before Sunset, 8.5/10

So I talked about Before Sunrise in the Favorite Romantic Movie thread and was inspired to check out it's sequel, Before Sunset. Luckily someone posted the whole film on Youtube (Thanks Youtube!).

I don't want to go into too much detail because like it's predecessor it is a movie that is all about dialog. Before Sunrise featured two idealistic people finding each other and trying to find themselves. In this movie the two have found themselves, and each other, again years later. I found the movie to be a little heartbreaking, but was impressed by the writing of Delpe and Hawke. It's bittersweet nostalgia. Linklater returns to direct, and this time the movie feels like it was shot in real time although I suspect it wasn't. Worth seeing (provided you saw Sunrise).

Dawn of the Dead: 7.0/10

Land of the Dead 4.5/10

Wanted: 8.5/10 Most people say it's stupid, but I like it. Angelina Jolie + guns? Yes, please.

Who watches the Watchmen? I will do. Tonight. Again. 10/10.
