Concrete, Steel, and Paint

A pretty good short documentary focusing on prisoners, art, redemption, and the dichotomy present between victims and perpetrators.

A touching movie I finally got around to seeing and could even relate to on a personal level. Always bittersweet when those come along.

And I thought Sofia Coppola was awesome before she directed this.

Sigh....

I think Virgin Suicides is the best thing she ever did

Crazy, stupid love. That was kind of brilliant.

If you haven't seen The Life Aquatic, do so now.

I've seen parts of it, but yeah, not straight through.

She was my NYC Jewish princess fantasy. Part based on reality and part based on her awful/wonderful performance in that Godawfulfather movie.

Trash. Childhood trash. I'll never watch a 90's children's movie about toys that isn't Toy Story again.

It certainly isn't racist--it deals with the "white protagonist that saves the Negroes" problem better than "The Blindside--"but it is understandable as to why people might be upset about the film. It's subject matter is still a sensitive issue for many people, and the film presents its historical background in a rather safe manner that uses just enough to mine "emotion" from the film, but not enough that will upset anyone in the theater.

For the most part you're right, this movie is a filtered, pristine, little version of a very tense and horrifying time in the history of the united states.

But I'm on the fence about the "white protagonist that saves the negroes" part, it is true that Emma Stone is sort of the heroic figure of the film, as it is in many other "racially charged" movies like Dance With Wolves or even The Last Samurai (sort of fits in the category).

But isn't that what's really the issue of RACISM ? I'm not saying all films about the topic should have a white hero, deffinitely not, but having a white character realizing how the actions of those, who share the color of his skin, are despicable, manages to highlight how racism is universally wrong, it doesn't matter what your ethnicity or your context is, racism is wrong.

I actually quote that movie pretty often. Just the line "Do not do magic you do not understand," that being said I haven't seen it since like 5th grade... so I won't argue that it holds up well

I've just finished reading it :D !

I don't think I mentioned it before in my earlier review, but I do agree with Miss Sullivan that Minny herself, while delightfully portrayed (in my opinion) by Octavia Spencer, did seem like it was a character written to push forward some stereotypes that, quite frankly, are very outdated (and that's putting kindly), I knew that uncomfortable feeling I got, when I saw Minnie in the "Crisco" scene with Jessica Chastain, didn't show up in my gut for no reason.

Though I must say Mal, if that is a picture of your sister at the end of the article, then I don't know what she's talking about when she says she's a "Big Black Woman"

So basically, I need to enter "create your own character" mode in my my mind and make that happen.

1. I wish I could write as well as your sister

2. She's absolutely right, and "The Help" enforcing old, out-dated stereotypes--though they are still regularly used in the portrayal of black characters in the medium--was a rather troubling, and sometimes cringe-worthy, aspect of the film. While a man in front of me was uproariously laughing at Mimi enthusiastically proclaiming how much she loved fried chicken, I couldn't help but feel rather uncomfortable in my seat. Mal's sister nor I are proclaiming that "The Help" is racist, and I do believe that the origins of the film were well-meaning; however, the film's biggest fault is that, rather than take a sharp, serious look at a period of time where it was dangerous to not only be black, but to be outspoken against an oppressive society, it treats the effects of the civil rights movement--and the tragedies associated with it--as a safe, easily digestible package for people to consume.
