Pretty bad, but the sheer amount of fanservice made it pretty watchable.

Image

Some pretty cool fight scenes, Johnny Cage is a bad-ass.

I can't lie, DOA was light and fun enough with servicable humor and acting that made it pretty painless. My friends and I watched it as part of a Bad Movie marathon that included gems like The Spirit, Max Payne, and the Legend of Chun-Li, and it was hands down the most watchable film.

Mortal Kombat, on the other hand, I thought has just aged horribly.

Edit: the tagline of DOA is just so terrible it just lowered my opinion of the movie as a whole.

Funny, the general consensus at my movie night was that Mortal Kombat was better.

Doesn't have enough fanservice, though, in my opinion. So it's a little bit of a toss-up. Better fight scenes or revealing bathing suits on everyone? *weighs scales*

*cough* breasts *cough*

Though I would say that when it comes to 2 mediocre movies based on niche IP's, fanservice is probably tops.

First of all, what's IP's?

Second, you know fanservice is synonymous with breasts, right? I tend to use tvtropes lingo, so it can be a little confusing.

Mortal Kombat may be painfully 90's
but its just overall a literally better movie.
Lambert and Ashby steal the show.

You know what's great about Mortal Kombat ?

THE FRACKIN' GAMES

Way too many people associate the Mortal Kombat brand with that piss-poor pathetic movie instead of the games that, albeit flawed, have been consistently great over the years.

I strongly disagree, and I loved kombat back in the day. But DOA doesn't struggle from the same pacing issues or general narrative issues that are inherent in Mortal Kombat's storytelling. For 2 movies that hinge on viewers having to watch various characters fight and die, DOA did a much better job at integrating them into the plot and building momentum. Which is funny imo because kombat technically has a much better conflict built-in from the jump. Yet the whole time I'm just like where is this going?

Also by IP I meant intellectual property.

Despite being set in a high school context, it feels like a big sprawling 30's-40's P.I. murder mystery.
All the classic noir tropes in a very unconventional setting.
Thanks to Oscar and Feli I saw this post haste.
And loved it.

Edit:

Full review is up.

Haywire - 8/10

If K-Tanch is smart, Gina Carano will be the next Sonya Blade.

It was a good movie and all, but Hanna did it better.

The ending was also extremely unsatisfying, and its narrative was convoluted for no actual purpose. What was the point of starting at the diner, then having her narrate her history during a drive while telling her "hostage" to remember everything and then never having that character appear again? There was no reason the story couldn't have simply been chronological.

I swear to god, I'm not just contrarian corner over here.

There's so much sac fluid in this movie.

The Wackness

It was a decent coming-of-age story, but Levine's subsequent 50/50 was a much better film.

Happy 4/20, everyone!

That was actually a really good sequel.

I thought so too.
I love it when pinhead and his cenobytes have to face off with the channard cenobyte.
And of course the return of Kristy.
Which is something horror movies don't do right off the bat.
They usually wait until like #3 or #4.
Bleh.

Kay, that was better than Taken. I still haven't seen Unknown, so I'll have to check that out to complete the "Liam Neeson Kicking Ass and Taking Names" trilogy.

Unknown wasn't that good in my book.
Though The Grey gets overall points for being better than Taken,
Taken is still more enjoyable in my opinion.
