I blame not being able to watch Another Earth because of a fat asshole at Wal-Mart and my own complacency.

Another Earth was preeetty good, but I don't think it could possibly live up to my expectations regardless. I thought it was pretty well done, but I also think the concept and the imagery evoked in the trailer is probably stronger than the movie itself.

As for Contracted, it's fine, I guess. The twist is simultaneously interesting and also disappointing. And it seems like it's trying to be a smart movie with themes of being different or a lesbian or something, but I'm not sure it handles those themes well or explores them enough. I don't know, I wouldn't really recommend it.

Contracted sucked. It's essentially a shittier version of Starry Eyes with a lamer twist.

"Oh fuck you're so wet"

Ugh.

Yeah, a friend of mine didn't like it, but he said I might love it and wanted to know what I thought of it. I'll probably end up agreeing more with him than anything.

Seems about right.

Also, I just finished watching Wristcutters: A Love Story. Damn, that was a good movie.

I've been meaning to watch that ever since it came out. It was the favorite movie of a few girls I liked when I was a teen. And last year, a script reader told me that one of my scripts reminded him a bit of that movie. Watching the trailer, they seemed like a good match.

Hardcore - 8/10

It's not the international Bourne-esque thriller that Taken was, but it hits a lot of the same emotional beats, and maybe even does it better.
Probably more like 8MM with Nic Cage though. Both solid comparisons. Good movie overall, powerful.

Vacancy - 7.5/10
Totally didn't mean to end up doing a Snuff themed night, but oh well.
Serviceable and exceptionally taut, Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale are also great.
But the marriage-on-the-rocks-because-of-a-dead-kid thing is a certifiable cliche at this point and brought the movie down.
For once, a scary killer thriller should have a protagonist duo that are deeply in love, not at each other's throats. That's what the bad guys are for.
Eden Lake with Michael Fassbender comes to mind, but that movie was so fucking dark I don't think I'd watch it again. Left me feeling troubled.

Mortdecai PG-13 - 2/10

2 out of 10 could easily be 2 out of 1000 because that's precisely how many laughs I got out of this movie.
My mom rented it on VOD on a whim, and I joined her to watch it. How could it be that bad with that cast?
Oh man. I don't hate the movie, but it's the equivalent of a fart in a crowded elevator. It smells, someone's giggling, and everyone else is gagging.
Once it's over, you step out and get some fresh air. On the scale of loathsome movies, bottoming out with pure hatred is when a movie basically smears shit on your face.
Thankfully, Mortdecai isn't that bad. It's just baaaarely watchable. There's two scenes that stand out as actually being funny, but only because their the payoff of shitty running jokes that aren't funny the first 60 times it happens. Ugh. Time wasted I won't get back.

Just watched Ex Machina.

It's a really fantastic sci-fi film about artificial consciousness and Oscar Issac is great in it.

Also watched a slew of kaiju films yesterday. Good times.

Watched Seven Samurai with some friends. Great as always. I'm always really impressed that it's three and a half hours long yet never boring.

*high five* I hope it makes enough money to warrant a sequel.

Also, I just finished watching The Voices, a wonderful movie in which Ryan Reynolds plays against type in the role of an introverted and isolated man who happens to be schizophrenic. It's a black comedy and reminded me quite a bit of Super and Filth. And best of all, it made me think. I really recommend it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't a sequel confirmed waaaaay before we even got a trailer?
Isn't the next one called Mad Max: Furiosa?

I heard it would be called Mad Max: The Wastelands. I know Miller has two sequels planned, but I don't know if they're greenlit yet.

looks like they're supposed to be prequels, and apparently immortan joe is set to return in at least one of them.

I'm not sure I'm so happy about that.
I'd like to see Max return and see Furiosa again, building on the dynamic established in this one.
Why would they do prequels?
