Master of Disguise and Pain and Gain.

It's been a rough night.

Is Pain and Gain really that bad? What didn't you like about it?

Pain and Gain is just kind of stupid. Surprise surprise. It's self-aware, but not in a smart way. The whole movie's basically just look at how stupid these criminals are while still trying to make you sympathize with them. The whole movie's a huge case of trying to have your cake and eat it too. Like when the camera's leering at models and bikini girls in an attempt to satirize vain body culture while also clearly trying to entice the viewer with the very thing it's making fun of. Also, Jesus, Michael Bay movies look bad. Same as Transformers, everyone looks orange and greasy. The highest compliment I could give it is that it's not boring, but Joe's testimony seems to refute even that.

Actually I agree with RJ wholeheartedly. It wasn't boring while I was watching it, there were even a few good laughs in the movie- but it wasn't good enough to keep me interested to come back and devote more time to finishing it.
Also, despite the fact Bay is a virtuoso with insane action scenes and spectacle, his high-contrast visual style is just... an eye sore. So much sweat. Ick. I'm definitely looking at you Bad Boys (1 and 2). I really couldn't bring myself to watch most of his movies again, except for the first Bad Boys (maybe), The Rock, and The Island. Beyond that... eh.

"Locke"

Tom Hardy is a man just trying to go for a nice drive, but people keep pestering him on the phone. Won't they let him drive in peace?

Hey, he's asking for it. He's calling them too!

the man from uncle - 7/10

neat flick considering i've never seen the show or know anything about it, but my mom said that it captured the spirit of the show pretty well, and the filming techniques were pretty much what they did, too. so that's neat.

ant-man - 7.5/10

neat flick but imo i didn't think it added all that much to the mcu. still worth a watch and i would love to see a prequel focusing on a young pym.

Attack on Titan (Live Action) - 6.8/10

It has a lot of issues, but being insane and horrifying isn't one of them.
The titans are exceptionally well realized, and the action scenes are great.
The pacing is rushed, the story is hurried along way too fast, and the plot is kinda truncated.
But the effects are great, the cinematography is great, the acting is even pretty good.
It's just too fucking short. Incidentally, it's rather easy to compare to Starship Troopers, but even that movie realized it needed a 2 hour run time.
Attack on Titan breezes right the fuck by at around 90 minutes, and it feels like there's a lot missing.
Recommended though for the titans. Absolutely horrifying onscreen monsters.

Boy, that's the exact opposite of the anime then.

I take it only the manga has proper pacing.

But anyway, it's good to hear the effects and action are good. Shinji Higuchi, the director/sfx director is co-director of the new Japanese Godzilla film.

See I thought the anime was alright.
It did sorta suffer from DBZ syndrome.

^ I'm buying Fury Road today.

Saw A Nightmare on Elm Street last night.
Love that movie. R.I.P. Wes Craven.

For some reason my friend finally got me to see The Room.
I regret everything.

The Room really is a movie that you need to see in a group. With people who already know all the best jokes and riffs. And you're all drunk.

Here in Portland, there's a place called Cinema 21 that hosts monthly viewings of The Room. There's a prompt script in the lobby, so you already know some of the most popular jokes. And everyone has plastic spoons to throw from the balcony onto the moviegoers below.

It's the perfect blend for those who want an interactive group screening of a riff-worthy film, but don't want the balls-out insanity of a Rocky Horror screening. If you haven't been to a Room screening like it, you haven't lived.

The Cat Returns and Millenium Actress.

Both fantastic animated romantic adventure movies.

The Core - 6/10

It's basically a 50's era sci-fi/disaster flick wrapped up in modern psuedo science and cookie cutter dialog.
Good acting and some genuinely funny moments save this from being a drag though.
It's crap, but it's flashy and entertaining. It's also devoid of some of the cringe-worthy shit you'd find in a Michael Bay movie of the same ilk.

Jurassic World - 7/10

So far (about halfway through I think) this is really fun and enjoyable.
I can't believe I opted not to go see this in theaters based on tepid word of mouth.
Tch.

I really only thought the second half was any good.

Also, I saw Shyamalan's latest film, Scary Grandma.

It was a wild wild ride. I laughed, I cried, I questioned my existence.

The Life Aquatic and Moonrise Kingdom. Still two of the best movies I've ever seen.
