Maybe I didn't, but in retrospect, it was a really shitty love letter

Only if you're unfamiliar with the source material.

Maybe you're giving too much praise to an era where comics needed to evolve ?

to be fair, all-star superman was kind of a love-letter to the silver age, but was also modern and a good story.

I haven't read the Dini Batman btw.

Maybe you just haven't read it and can't recognise an awesome homage when you see it

I've read very little Silver Age, that's for sure.

Still I feel, in my humble opinion, that comics, like videogames, went in the right direction after the years passed.

But isn't it cool when modern video games reference old video games? Especially when you're one of the select few who get the reference? Or when a new installment in a video game franchise brings back an idea from an very old installment in an updated way? Metal Gear

Believe me man, I love my references anywhere I can find them:

But Dini's run on GCS ? Can't say I appreciated it.

Because it referenced classic Batman stories from the 50's and 60's, and not a completely unrelated comic mini from the eighties.

Not looking down, just pointing out the irrelevance

Hey, it was a cool reference, we were talking about references.

Anyways...

...did you read GCS after Dini left the title ? That's my question to you.

Dropped it because it was unreadable

What the fuck Smutty ? What the fuck ?

It was precisely at that moment, long after the Gaggy arc finished, that GCS had become READABLE again !

It became dispensible and silly, it made no sense and the chacters were merely charicatures. It quickly dropped to becoming the least important book in the bat-line, much like Streets Of Gotham and Batman And Robin did, leaving Detective and Batgirl as the only batbooks actually worth buying. I felt like I'd wasted so much money for very little payoff and attention to continuity or anything even worthwhile, which is also how I feel about the entire X-men line at the moment, and it makes me think that perhaps these big franchises should just stick to a maximum of three books per line with creative teams that are actually decent and don't just put out fluff and dumb stories that inaccurately portray characters and their motives.

So Harley Quinn and Catwoman trying to solve the mysteries of dead dogs around the city was not silly and caricaturesque ?

I'm sorry to say this Smutty, but you're Dr. Brooklyn when it comes to Paul Dini.

And that wasn't Dini's fault at all right ? I mean, clearly the negative response to his run wasn't at all what plummeted the numbers.

I mean, who would've thought the right idea to make a comic book about Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Harley Quinn was to do a carnival version of Melrose's place ? Only Paul Dini.

He fucked up this one time Smutty, doesn't mean he's a bad writer, but his angle wasn't right at all for the book.

 Says the guy who doesn't like the comics Morrison refers to, but loves Morrison's run... you're always so logical in your likes/dislikes
