Goddamnit I suck

Well, like I said, I don't doubt those could possibly be very good animes.

But even something like "Elfen Lied", which I find to be an excellent series, is hampered by the fact that it has too much fan service in it, which I think it's the case for almost all anime series these days.

I seriously agree about this.
I found some parts of Elfen Lied to be hard to get through.
I typically stick to anime movies. There seems to be less of that shit in them.
You should check out this older movie called Riding Bean, Feli.

Image

Though this is essentially a mindless 80's action movie, it does what it does with exceptional skill and flair.
The car chases and such are just amazing.
Also

Image

It's like a David Cronenberg sci-fi thriller on steroids.
Sex, grotesque bodily disfiguration, mutations, secret agencies and creatures that seem straight out of John Carpenter's nightmares.
It's sleazy as all hell, but also really damn good imo.

worth a look as well:
Memories
Cyber City OEDO 808
Samurai Champloo
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Paprika
Perfect Blue

I just finished Puella Magi Madoka Magica and it's quite good. I must say, the first half of the series, I was more interested in the deconstrucive elements than in the actual story or characters. It's basically like a "Watchmen" of "magic girl" shows like "Sailor Moon" or "Card Captor Sakura", with a good mix of "Pan's Labyrinth" thrown in, as in showing the interaction between two worlds as something potentially deadly and destructive for everyone involved. As it goes along, the character development becomes fascinating and the emtoional pay off is awesome, although the ending is a bit too reminescent of other animes, but there is a movie sequel so I'm interested in seeing how it will all play off next.

I must say, the imagery of the show reminded me a lot of "Sucker Punch" and I'll say that the themes are very similar. I think I can almost say that this is the movie "Sucker Punch" wanted to be or should have been.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Uh, you all need to watch this ridiculous fucking anime right now. That picture certainly doesn't do it justice.

Image

That picture doesn't either, but trust me on this one, the most recent JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is amazing and you should watch it with friends. I'm not sure alcohol is necessary because it seems to be alcohol in the form of animation anyway.

I just watched "The Rebellion Story" that concludes (at least, for now) Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I must say that it's a masterpiece of animation, with a great narrative, fascinating subversions of the "magical girl" anime subgenre and astonishing visuals. For better or worse, though, the ending is a downer. I'm still not sure if I like the ending or not, but I'm growing to accept it. Suppouseddly, the story could continue but if it doesn't, I guess I'm okay with its conclusion. It makes me wonder if that's how people felt when End of Evangelion came out, but even EOE leaves a light at the end of the tunnel, and some dark humor and irony. This ends in total darkness but it's cool. Japan did a wise choice in submitting it for Academy Award nomination, it really is that good but I'm not surprised that they didn't nominate it.

Watching this with a bunch of friends who haven't seen it. It's a really great show that's very re-watchable. Definitely one of my favorite anime, maybe even my favorite anime in general.

Neat.

I'm not sure if I'd watch it now, but I liked it as a kid, although I hardly remember it now. I used to think Tuxedo Mask was a badass, in fact, I even dressed up like him for Halloween or a costume party one time.

Apparently it's the unedited version, so there are the original lesbian lovers instead of vaguely incestuous cousins.

So that's good, I guess.

So yeah, Way of the Sword (Katanagatari) is a pretty cool anime.

Very quirky, very interesting. Sounds cookie cutter on paper, but the writing and plots are pretty great and the animation is beautiful as well. The fourth (I think) episode was so dark and weird that it really floored me. Like Patrick Bateman had entered the building. Check it out.

An anime that's basically Battle Royale, but the only weapons are various types of bombs. Pretty good so far all things considered.

By the way, Btoom is actually pretty much one of the worst things ever. I rescind my recommendation.

Well, first of all, there's an almost rape scene in the second episode that's weirdly fetishized. But I can overlook that. What breaks the series is that the protagonist himself, the guy we're supposed to identify and sympathize with, contemplates raping that same character himself.

Our main character genuinely thinks about raping someone. And then goes on to have a poorly written love story with her.

The series is entertaining at first, but then it devolves into a pile of hot garbage where you can't even like it in a guilty pleasure sort of way anymore.

FLCL (Fooly Cooly) is still an amazing show. Your mileage may vary, but it's a pretty great zany sci-fi coming of age story. My favorite anime next to Paranoia Agent.

has anyone ever actually managed to understand what flcl was entirely about?

i assume it's some crazy sci-fi coming of age thing, but overall still makes almost no sense to me.

It's actually really straight forward. It's just presented in a confusing way because it's told from the point of view of a normal human fourteen year old.

The ending to FLCL makes me really emotional.

Watching it a second time and Durarara is still amazing. I really just recommend watching it.

Translated as Stray God, Noragami is a pretty good time. It may kind of strike you as a typical shonen anime at first, but it's really beautiful, fun, and has a pretty killer soundtrack so far. I really recommend it.
