This has finally gone into production. Director Steven Spielberg, producer Peter Jackson (who will direct the second in the series). Jamie Bell as Tintin, Daniel Craig as the villain (Red Rackham) and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the Thomson Twins.
The word is performance capture technology (massively pioneered and pushed forward at Weta Workshop/Productions) for face/body, stylised in a semi-realistic way.
If anyone can do it, it's probably these geezers.
What do you all think?

Btw, this Tintin story and many others were animated as a tv series by Canada's Nelvana in the early 90's. The voices are painful, but the animation cpatures Herge's style beautifully.

I LOVE Tintin. Read all of the comics in the library as a kid, and I plan to buy them all when I come into a bit of money.

It's good to hear that it finally got the go-ahead, since I know they were having trouble funding it because of the economy. Any idea when it's going to come out?

I think they'll have to change the name. They cant sell it to mature audiences with Unicorn in there. Im excited because of Speilberg, Jack, Pegg and Frost's involvement. I love all 4, so as long as the trailers dont look too weird I'll go see it.

so what exactly is the basic plot of this series? I've been hearing things about the movie and the only reason i know anything about it is because of Speilberg and Jackson being attached.

I'm discouraged that this is going to be another 100% photorealistic-mocap-animated film. Frankly I'm expecting it to be kind of uncomfortable/nightmarish to look at, which is a shame because I love Tintin. I think they either should have gone with either live action (with prosthetics to exaggerate some characters' appearances if necessary, a la Robert Altman's Popeye) or traditional animation.

I'll withhold my judgment until we actually start seeing stills/trailers, but I'm not optimistic.

We won't be seeing this for a few years. They are taking a long, slow road and trying to get it right. I predict that when The Hobbit is released, it will raise the bar the way LOTR did, and Tintin will do so again. This aint gonna be no Polar Express.

And I would hazard a guess that the title of the Tintin film will likely change too.

I take it that you're looking forward to Tintin as well then.

i'd hardly call Tintin obscure, or at least, it's not obscure over here, and i assumed since the kind of calibur of people that are working on it, it wasn't obscure in new zealand or america either

It's huge here, one of the most popular comic franchises. People who know nothing about comics automatically think of tintin, the phantom, asterix and batman.

In america... if it doesn't have explosions and cursing we couldn't care less!

Well here in america we think superman, Spiderman, and Batman, now people think iron-Man, Hulk and captan America.

If you polled the random american they probably would not know about tintin, aterix and only some would know about The phantom.

Obviously Superman, Spiderman and Batman are MUCH more notorious than Tintin, Asterix and The Phantom, but anyone who has decent amount of common knowledge is aware of the existence of those three.
