I don't really agree with that. While Lost might be influenced in some small way by Star Wars, and even make reference to it (Such as the "Some Like It Hoth" episode where Hurley tries to rewrite Star Wars), I think Stephen King's The Stand is the biggest influence.

We have only a month to go before the final season airs. I've been watching since the first night it aired. Although I thought season 5 really dipped in quality, it had one major twist and shed some light on what is maybe the true driving force behind the story, that of Jacob and the mysterious Man In Black.

I...don't remember saying that..

In any case, why do you think that of season 5?

I just didn't think season 5 was that good. It felt like the writers were trying to play catch up since they only had 2 seasons left to wrap things up. Especially when season 4 was set in a few days and involved Jack and co trying to get off the island. So we spent a significant time jumping back and forth to different time lines, finally settling in the DHARMA 1970's. I really didn't like that. I prefer seeing the Losties trying to survive in the jungle, not hanging out in relative comfort in the barracks. Overall, there weren't as many stand out episodes compared to other seasons.

I think my main problem is that the season is similar to that of season 3 (my other least favourite season) in that they spread the story very thin. It seemed like we had characters all over the place (Jack and co in 77, Sun and Ben in the present, Desmond off of the island). I think the story is hurt when we have so many separate story lines. The season finale I thought was also hurt by this. In the season 4 finale there were maybe 3 or 4 different story lines that eventually converged towards the end. In the season 5 finale none of the separate story arcs converged. It just wasn't that satisfying of a season.

While browsing (i.e. trapped) on Wikipedia, specifically reading about the number 42, I came across what I consider to be a strong indication that the writers of Lost have just been taking the piss, and that there is no "big answer".

Quote:
In the TV show Lost, 42 is the last of the mysterious numbers, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. In an interview with Lostpedia, producer David Fury confirmed this was a reference to Hitchhiker's.

No, I don't agree with that at all. With how this show is structured I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a "big answer", or at the very least a main point to the series. Just because the show references pop culture and history doesn't mean the references themselves don't have meaning. It's been said that the numbers don't ultimately matter to the shows end game, and I'm fine with that. But the numbers do have a purpose.

Lost is fucking back! Awesome episode, and the reason this is the best series currently on television!

Anyone else watching?

Aw, no way! If there's a way you can watch it online you should try. I can't imagine having to wait that long.

I won't spoil it for you, but I would rate the episode higher than anything from season 5. It's the first two hour premier we've had in a long time.

Confusing, and exciting. Haven't been this enthused about the show in a long time.

The last season is now underway, Mr. Pain.

Personally, I'm waiting to hear fans' reactions toward the series finale. If it's positive, I'll go back and watch the whole series in one swoop.

Same.

The initial series lost me (heh!) pretty early on, but I have good friends who are addicted. I have considered an intervention, but they have me outnumbered...

Probably not a bad idea. But I'm feeling positive. This season has started off with a bang and I'm glad after six seasons it's still able to hook me in.

It's not a show you can just pick up at any point, though. You really do need to watch each episode. I think watching it on DVD is probably the way to go, as there isn't an agonizing wait between episodes.

I can't predict how this show will end and if I will be disappointed or not with its ending, but I have faith. Even when the show was treading water (which it has done a few times) it has always managed to bounce back in a big, big way. There are very few shows that reinvent themselves like Lost does, and manages to outdo themselves each season. This season looks like it will be the most ambitious yet. This is the Watchmen of television. A bold claim, but I can't think of another show as intricate in its plot as this one.

Uuuuuuhhhmmm, I don't know what the forum rules are on copyright and internet sharing.

But are people in here allowed to post the download links for the torrents of the episodes ?

The season 6 premiere was incredible. Some scenes that really stood out to me:

*Monster-Locke taunting Ben about Locke. As someone who invested so much in the character of Locke, it made me hate the Monster (which I'm absolutely certain was the intention) hearing him put Locke down like that. I really hope that Locke returns in some shape or form and kicks the Monster's ass. Terry O'Quinn's acting in this scene was terrifyingly good. I was actually scared for Ben, Richard, and the other characters when he was onscreen.

*Alternate-Jack and Alternate-Locke discussing Jack's dad at the airport. It was really touching.

I never got into this show.

But let me know when LAX: Part 2 comes on, because Rob McElhenney, aka Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is reprising his role as Aldo.

EY-YOOOO!! :D

I totally forgot about that guy as a character. In fact I had to look him up. As far as I know, he wasn't in the episode. He was just a very minor character, anyway, he had like one small scene, and looking him up it seems as if he was killed off by the writers off screen.

Also, LA X part 2 was already on. LA X was a single episode and I don't know why they split the name up like that.

Aldo will be (highlight spoilers) returning in two weeks, the February 16 episode.
