Pretty cool trailer for the videogame.

Though I still hate the new suit.

Where did the music in that trailer come from, I wonder? Here's hoping that wasn't from the film's score.

So I know this is a bit early to talk about, but I think it might garner some interesting discussion. If they do end up making a sequel, who do you guys think would make a good villain?

Definitely too early to tell. We have no way of knowing which villains this movie is going to set up.

That said, I'll be sorely disappointed if two films go by and we're no closer to seeing the next incarnation of Green Goblin or Venom. I'd also like to see Spidey take on Kingpin, but that's not happening. Even if Fox's rights to the character lapse in the immediate future, there's no way Marvel is loaning him to Sony.

Thinking a little bit harder, the trailers seem to imply a great interest in science. It appears that prodigal knowledge of science is another great power to be treated with great responsibility. This theme might be further explored with such renegade technological geniuses as Mysterio, Vulture, or even Chameleon. Alternatively, the theme might be explored from a different angle by way of Scorpion, Rhino, Sandman, or any of the other numerous Spider-Man villains borne of scientific experiments gone awry.

Alternatively, the trailer made it patently obvious that Spider-Man is one of the most wanted figures in Manhattan, with an especially dedicated enemy in Cpt. Stacy. Sounds to me like a golden opportunity to bring in Kraven, a character devoted entirely to hunting down Spidey.

Those are all some pretty good thoughts. As for me personally, though, I don't think I very much care for seeing either the Green Goblin or Sandman again anytime soon. I thought they were both done sufficiently well enough in the previous movies not to particularly warrant recycling them in the reboot. But Kraven and Mysterio were two candidates that popped into my mind. When it comes to Mysterio especially, I think there are a lot of interesting possibilities just effects-wise visually. There could be entire sequences where he puts Peter through hell using his special effects prowess and that would be extremely interesting to see on-screen. As for the whole science gone awry angle, Spencer and Alistair Smythe, father and son of the robotic spider slayers, would be an interesting one to ponder. Lastly, I actually think Carnage could work. It sounds a little out of left field and I know that his origin in the comic books is dependent entirely on Venom's existence, but if he was just an organic bio-suit developed by the military or something to that effect who happened to become bonded with the serial killer Cletus Kasady, it could probably work. I think if they went this route, it would have to be Carnage and not Venom because Carnage's entire being revolves around violence which I think would be a better reflection of the suit's purpose turned on its head than the suit being Venom could possibly be.

Also, I don't think we really have to think about what villains may or may not be set up in this movie to ponder what ones appear in the next. It should be noted that neither Doctor Octopus, Sandman, nor Venom were set up at all in the previous films to which they appeared. The Lizard was, however, and he never ended up being in a Sam Raimi Spider-man flick at all.

Only because Sony pulled the plug before Raimi could get the chance.

As to your main point, I simply meant to state the possibility that this movie may provide hints or clues as to which villains may show up in the sequel. I never meant to imply that such set-ups were mandatory, only that they would be helpful in predictions for the next movie.

If Gwen Stacy lives in this movie, Green Goblin should be in the sequel. He's basically the Joker of Spider-Man, so it's definitely best for him to pop up sooner than later.

It'd be cool to see Green Goblin again and everything, but I'd really rather see one of the villains I've stated to get a shot at a big screen adaptation instead.

...Such as the ones I've stated.

Kraven, Carnage, Mysterio, the Smythes.

I'm kind of holding a torch for Carnage in particular, but I know it's not gonna happen.

I don't have photographic memory, hence why I ask.

Kraven is a really really good one, it's a very unique type of villain, and one the Spider-Man can "proudly" claim to have.

Mysterio is a great villain, but for him to be effective, it would require an equally great script.

Carnage as you said it's probably not gonna happen, I don't think the studio execs might want to try "Venom 2" after the fiasco with Topher Grace.

And who the fuck are the Smythes ?

:| The post where I said it is on this page, though.

Spencer Smythe is the inventor of the spider-slayers, robots specifically designed to track down and capture/kill Spider-man.

Alistair Smythe is his son who essentially bonds himself with a spider-slayer carapace.

I suspect they are setting up ultimate venom with the Peter's parents storyline, also I heard that Eddie Brock Sr will be in the movie, not sure if it was ever debunked though.

And how could anyone not know the Smythes, Alastair was a major player in the 90s cartoon.

Man, how do you know they're not setting up Russian Red Skull and robot clones?

But anyway, I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, it could turn out to be pretty cool, but on the other hand, I kind of want them to take a crack at a villain they haven't tried yet.

Still, if he turns out to look anything like this, it would be pretty sweet.

Ultimate venom has a different origin, and they could easily give him a different look, as you suggest, but I'm not sure if I'd prefer beefy or stringy though.
a new villain would be preferable, but if they are going to have another go at a villain they already did, it should be the one they fucked up the first time, right?

You can't really have Carnage without Venom, so I don't think he would be in. Kraven would be a nice choice, but you'd have to throw in a second villain to make him more interesting (Kraven = not that interesting). I'd say Kraven and Mysterio or Rhino would be a good team-up.
