This is almost as bad as that time I found out they were rebooting the Spider-man movies!

1) Del Toro has a ton of movies on his production slate and they need him a lot more than The Hobbit does.
2) The Hobbit has been going nowhere fast for the past couple of years while MGM slowly rots away.
3) Even if MGM were to declare bankruptcy today and sell off The Hobbit rights tomorrow, that would bring up a whole new set of challenges to delay Hobbit even further.
4) Now that Hobbit has finally ground to a complete halt and 007 has entirely ceased production, MGM is left without a tentpole to lean on. This might actually help speed up their breakdown.

Del Toro made the right call. I've no doubt it was a hard one for him to make and for us to accept, but he was very smart to get out while the getting was good. Let the man get behind a camera again and make some magic for us.

Why are you always so logical, and always have the reasonable response?

It helps that a logical and reasonable response is so desperately needed here, tbone.

Good points as always Curi. In that case, I wish Del Toro well on his latest Spanish mind fuck.

There may be something very good coming from Del Toro leaving:

Del Toro would've done a better job, but I REALLY hope Jackson takes in on. Let's cross our fingers!

i would have absolutely loved to see del toro take a spin on the hobbit, but if jackson does it that would be fine too.

i think the biggest advantage of PJ taking on the hobbit is stylistic consistency with LOTR, but i really would have loved to see Del Toro's take on the creatures of middle earth.

That alone would've been worth the price to see the movie, as it was with Hellboy.

That sucks. I hope Peter Jackson doesn't take over as I'm still not really convinced that he's that good of a director. He's like this generations George Lucas. Just let it die, maybe in a few years or so Del Toro will be available again and the franchise will be under a company that isn't hanging on by a thread.

That would be a good call if anyone at MGM was willing to do so :(

And in all honesty I am going to agree with Madvillain here, I wouldn't feel that Jackson is the adequate director for a movie like this, I thought that LOTR was a pop corn flick that was only made by the CGI artists, from whom Jackson ripped of all credit and took home an oscar.
