In my opinion, there's definitely enough room for two adaptations of the original text, especially if the two of them are going to be so wildly different in focus and tone.

I just don't see what the point is, beyond money, yes I get there is money to be made. The book is a great read with a lot to say about the military and war, not a lot of that was translated to the original or the tv series... but that doesn't mean a second movie needs to be made.

That is precisely why a second movie could be made, to make a proper adaptation.

Slim chance anyways, but hope is last to go !

The book, though, has too much depth that can't be put in a movie, so what will end up happening is focusing again on the action and basically we'll get more of the same... I doubt any studio is going to rush into a movie with massive action pieces like ST has (while trying to make social commentary) with Avatar so fresh on the minds of viewers. (Yes, I know the themes of Avatar and ST are totally different).

Not that I particularly care about this movie, but I think Lord of the Rings and Watchmen have both proven that statement to be a falsity.

Ask hard core fans of either of those and they will rant for ohours about how much was left out though.

Sure a lot of things were left out. It's the nature of adaptation. But both the books and the movies are good in their own right. Fans that don't understand that don't make the Lord of the Rings and Watchmen movies bad ideas.

No, it doesn't make them bad ideas... but when there is no real reason to believe this movie will rectify anything that the first movie and tv series left out makes this an idea that should be carefully considered before being undertaken

It's a moot point, the movie's already being made, what we can do is hope that whoever is behind this has already considered everything there is to consider.

True, but hollywood and it's adapting skills have made me very jaded.

Clearly the reason why you hated The Avengers :D !

Anyways, like the Doctor said, let's hope this movie doesn't keep feeding into our cynicism towards the film industry.

You are better than anybody at treating exceptions like they are the rule. I'm being serious on that, you are insanely talented at that.

Joking Brooky, nobody here is completely happy about Hollywood's "performance".
