Point of interest: Brad Bird had nothing to do with this. It's Andrew Stanton's gig.

Well, getting back to your intended point, it's worth remembering that "Princess of Mars" predates pretty much anything else that the filmmakers could possibly have used for inspiration. I'm certain that Star Wars could never have been made in a world without John Carter, and I won't even get started on how Avatar thoroughly ripped off Burroughs' work.

The way I see it, turnabout is fair play.

Well, you could say the same for Pocahontas and Dance With Wolves, maybe more accurate would be to say that Avatar ripped off from the former two.

True, Curi

I am aware of the timeframe for the original stories and the lurid pulp era predates Flash Gordon and so on. It's just that movie magic isn't about ripping off scenes filmed elsewhere already. Like that pose that people seem to adopt these days when dropping onto all fours (or threes if holding a weapon) while slowly panning back with the camera. Not that they used it in the trailer much, but the panning is there for the floor shot. I swear there is some serious lack of imagination in what to do with a lens, some lighting and a bit of movement.

I notice a few modern green-screen clichés in the trailer. Slo-mo leaping with weapons (yawn) Star Warsy arena monster battle scene. But the movie looks like it's having a wad of cash thrown at post production, so the eye-candy factor seems enormous.

I wonder if about only ½% of the general movie public knows who Burroughs is, let alone Carter!

They should really have slapped on "From the creator of Tarzan" though :D

you know John Carter Of Mars predates star Wars over 60 years lol

John cars books debuted in 1912 ;)

i wasn't talking about the events, I was talking about the visuals, and the way the trailer is constructed.

How can a book have visuals? everyone interprets things differently.

I think he just means the ways things are described and played out.

Unless it's quite forward with details, see Harry Potter for further references.

So Brad Bird ripped off the graphic novel Watchmen in The Incredibles, his animated film homage to The Fantastic Four?
And he has no idea he ripped off Star Wars in this film... which he is in no way attached to?

Interesting.

Ever read any interviews or done any research on him?
You can be pretty sure Brad Bird knows more about film and animation than all of us put together.

I should have just deleted that post as soon as I was reminded by Curi that Bird isn't directing this.

as for reading interviews with Bird I remember a specific one where he said he'd never heard of Watchmen. which considering the similarities between Watchmen and the Incredibles is hard to swallow. But this thread isn't about Bird at all.

Only similarity I can think of off the top of my head between Watchmen and The Incredibles is the whole superhuman registration thing, which was done long before and has been done many times after Watchmen

Well, the bad guy has been killing off superheroes, and has been engineering a major threat on his secret island which he is going to land in the middle of a major city...

But yeah, these things are tropes, they don't originate in Watchmen but were used and messed with by Moore because they are the foundations of many super-hero stories.

what about Syndrome's clear similarity with Ozy?

both have a secret island where they are developing something to masquerade as an alien in an attempt to bring about a new world order with them in a position of power, by "saving the day" :ugeek:

Do it?
I did it thirty five minutes ago.
And say, would you like a chocolate covered pretzel?
They're a little melty, but damn are they exquisite.

You think that's bad?

Go compare Watchmen to Dr. Strangelove, then come back.

that's different, Dr Strangelove was a conscious inspiration for Watchmen, but why are we still talking about this?!

I can't enjoy The Incredibles.
Family-friendly Watchmen ripoff.
