Wow, I was not expecting this news at all. Seems like Affleck has been picked to direct the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand: http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/joshw24/news/?a=48678

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, it is set during and after a pandemic that wipes out 99.4% of the worlds population. The survivors must then reform society, locked in a battle between two god like figures in Mother Abigail, a 104 year old woman, and the demonic Randall Flagg. The Stand was adapted into a four part, eight hour mini series in 1994 and there is currently a Marvel comic book series going on. Given how long the story is (over a thousand pages), I wonder how they will try to tackle it on the big screen?

It wasn't great, but it wasn't that bad. I've read that this might be a multi picture deal, but I don't know for sure. I'm not sure if this is a story that lends itself to a multi picture format.

Not an Affleck fan, or just opposed to the general idea of a Stand film?

It's a book with about thirty main characters and it's about the length of four novels.
It shouldn't and doesn't need to be made into a movie.

Where did you ever get the idea that I disliked this idea?

Some people. Anyway, I think it looks fantrocious.

I know nothing about The Stand, but Affleck's proven himself to be more than capable as a director. I'll be especially interested to see him try his hand at something that isn't a gritty crime drama.

Color me intrigued.

So how would it work as a single film, I wonder? I think they would probably start it off with Captain Trips already underway, and maybe have the characters (Larry, Stu, Fran, etc) already on the road to Nebraska. Maybe the origin of Captain Trips is never explored? You'd be cutting out a ton of stuff to be sure, but remember that once they get there the story grinds to a halt. The final portion of The Stand kind of sucked.

If it is split into two movies, I don't know where you would end things off. The only thing I can think of would be for the good guys to make their way to Mother Abigails, maybe contrasted to a shot of Las Vegas, with Flagg getting his followers organized. Or maybe end on a cliffhanger with the last Ad Hoc meeting.

Read it (er, The Stand. But also read It!) A lot of King fans considered this to be his finest work.

I haven't yet seen any of his own directed movies, but it will be interesting to see what he does with this since it deals partly with the supernatural. And at least with him involved we might get some star talent on board.

I'll be sure to throw it on the "Don't Skip This" pile. I swear, I am never going to run out of material for that column.

Personally I think "IT" is his best work, but then you'll have people suggesting The Shining, or Carie.

There's always sequels, and scripting for movies manages to compress a lot of the material, I wouldn't be too worried, as Curi said, Ben Affleck has proven to be FAR more than effective as a director.

King just doesn't translate well to film though

I think it depends, both Carrie and Misery are absolutely brilliant.

The Shining is very far from being a good adaptation and Stand By Me is pretty loose.
The Darabont ones are good though.
Something else to take into consideration is that all of those films you've listed, with perhaps the exception of The Shining, are all based on very short works, whereas The Stand is King's longest work (unless if Under The Dome is).

And I can not stand the film version of Carrie, and Misery made too many changes for my liking.

It's not that loose, and it's still a great movie. And even if The Shinning isn't a great adaptation it's still considered to be a great movie.

I think the uncut edition of The Stand is still the longest, followed by Under The Dome and IT.

Any casting suggestions?
