I don't know if they tried, but some one like Jamie Lee-Curtis, Bruce Campbell, or Robert Englund would have been a vastly superior pick. Even kevin Bacon for his tie to Friday the 13th part 1 would have been better, in my opinion.

Curi expressed that opinion too, but I don't see the big deal. Sigourney Weaver's played one of the most famous and iconic horror heroines ever portrayed in film, so I thought the cameo was perfect.

See, I think of Alien as Sci-Fi before I think of it as Horror.

Sigourney Weaver > the above mentioned.

Just my thoughts. I felt her cameo was similar to the Bill Murray part of Zombieland. It was great from start to finish.

Murray's cameo is the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Weaver's cameo was a drawing of Ziggy.

You're never going to read my blog entries on the film, are you? *sigh* Okay, fine.

To me, the film doesn't really celebrate old-school slashers so much as it celebrates creativity. Just look at the spectacular splatter of the climax for proof. It celebrates all the immense possibilities of the horror genre while decrying just how formulaic horror films have become. Horror films need to surprise if they're going to scare, and there's no surprise in a film that we've already seen umpteen times before.

Also regarding the ending, look at it from a literal point of view. Without any deeper metaphorical reading, Marty and Dana effectively state that a world which needs the constant slaughter of young adults to keep spinning is a world not worth dying for. There's a certain truth to that, wouldn't you say?

That's an extremely harsh and unfounded criticism of her cameo that is undoubtedly being shaded by the fact that you essentially hated the movie.

Regardless of whether or not you felt she fit, she's a far better actress than those you've mentioned. To boot, Joss mentioned in an interview I read that he really wanted someone in the role who could bring a certain weight or gravitas to the role. So he was thinking strength, powerhouse acting, and star power. And Sigourney has those in spades over Jamie lee (imo) and certainly Robert englund whom most people wouldn't even recognize outside his Freddy makeup.

I suppose I can agree to that.

So instead every single young adult on the face of the Earth (including everybody else) dies? is that a better outcome?

I have nothing against Weaver, but to compare her cameo in Cabin in the Woods to Murray's in Zombieland was also unfounded. I agree she's a better actress, but for the tone/style of the movie... there were other picks that could have been as good.

I didn't HATE the film, like if I was at a aparty and somebody said let's watch Cabin in the Woods, I'd watch it... but if I had to pay or go out of my way to see it... I wouldn't.

Eh, it's Sci-Fi horror, it's a blending. Kind of like How Firefly is a Sci-Fi "western" it's more sci-fi than "western."

You'll get no argument from me on it being a blending of sci-fi and horror, but it's still one of the finest examples of horror cinema you could offer someone.

It's even been described numerous times by I believe Ridley Scott himself as a haunted house in space.

See, I think of Alien as Sci-Fi before I think of it as Horror.

Ditto. Bruce Campbell would've made me lose it big time

btw, JUST walked in the door from this.

FUCKING A!!!

9/10

This was insane. Insane. I loved it.

Though, I missed the first 8 minutes cause google was wrong about the precise showtime.
Care to walk me through anything important?

I loved it. I thought it was clever, and it ran through all the teen horror movie cliche's while being fundamentally different. And being privy to all the horror movies this pays tribute to just made it better.
When they were in the elevator and theres the big guy the girl is looking at stepping out of the shadows, some fucking know-it-all says "See? That right there everyone is Frankenstein."
And me and like three other people said pretty much simultaneously "No thats Pinhead" - "No thats a cenobyte" and "No thats the painful motherfucka' from Hellraiser!"

My Dad and I were just... floored for the last twenty minutes.

We both REALLY liked it.

But, I heard a bunch of negative opinions as I was walking out.

"Well that sucked."

"I hated the ancient one bullshit"

"Geezus that was stupid."

"Waste of my fucking money"

and then there was this kid, a ten year old looking KID...

"That was really creative Mom. I loved how it messed with standard horror movie tropes and then turned the whole thing on its ear."

she's just walking out of the screening room like:

I'm watching it again right now and it just totally isn't. At best the sci-fi/horror ratio is 50/50.

Anyway, glad you liked the film. UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE

Well yes. That ratio is solid.
HOWEVER...
In my head, I always log it under sci-fi.
Its just the way I catagorize. *shrug*

But the "cabin" trope was huge in Campbell's career OBVIOUSLY... he would've been perfect. er.

Honestly, I'd recommend seeing the film again in that case. And it sounds like you don't need the encouragement. But here's a quick summary, just for you.

The opening credits show a brief visual history of ritual sacrifices, with pictures shown in blood against a black background. It establishes a creepy mood while hinting at the upcoming themes of ritual sacrifice through the ages.

Smash cut to under the cabin, where we're introduced to Sitterson, Hadley, and Lin. They have some mundane talk and discuss things that won't be intelligible until much further in the movie. Another smash cut, we meet the main characters, and off we go.

As for Bruce Campbell, I'm kicking myself for not thinking of him sooner. The only potential problem I could see with that is that there's no way Marty could hold his own against Bruce Campbell. No friggin' way. I can almost -- almost -- bring myself to believe that Marty wouldn't be beaten senseless by Sigourney Weaver (or even, yes, Jamie Lee Curtis) without a fight. But it would take nothing short of a deus ex machina for Fran Kranz to last five seconds against Bruce Fucking Campbell.

Then again, Marty did inexplicably survive a zombie attack despite being outmatched and outgunned, so who knows?

Thanks a ton. I shall go read your reviews of it now.

Hmm, the scene itself didn't compare to Murray's obviously, but I think more so the part of how unexpected it was.

I suppose you have a good point there concerning The Chin.

This reminds me

my friends and I sat down to some twelve year-olds. How they got in, I don't know, it's a shitty theater so that makes sense. I tried to tell them to get out, but they didn't listen. Damn kids. That, and the left-hand side of the theater was flooded with high school kids, several people (including myself) constantly telling them to shut up and watch the damn movie.

Didn't affect my viewing of the film at all, but I hate it when underage kids are in an R-rated film.

A brief shimmer of humanity and protectiveness glimmers under Erik's rough exterior.

Truly, he has proved to be

a real human being and a real hero.
