So much yes to this.

It will sure make up for having such a shitty 2011.

2011 wasn't that bad. 2010 was worse I think.

And Kick Ass too,
I haven't seen 127 hours yet but even so last years there was a small handful of great movies, this year there have been a lot more good movies.

I haven't seen most of those, but Thor, quite frankly, was absolutely mediocre.

Even then man, be real, even The King's Speech beats the crap out of all those movies

I'm already putting together my Best of 2011 lists. Yes, lists. Plural. They won't be published for a couple of weeks, since there are so many candidates for inclusion that I want to see before considering the lineups final.

For now, I'll only say that at this exact same point last year, I was struggling to come up with enough worthy entries for a top 10 list. Right now, my cup is absolutely flowing over. I could make a top 20 of all the "masterpieces" released this year, and I'd still have to make some extremely painful cuts. And that isn't even including some reportedly amazing films I haven't seen yet, like The Artist, War Horse, A Dangerous Method, or "Tinker, Tailor."

This was not a bad year for cinema, it's just that all the really great movies were so easily overlooked. Nobody saw Drive, The Tree of Life, Take Shelter, Jane Eyre, Beginners, or Attack the Block, but everyone saw The Help, Hangover 2, Breaking Dawn, Transformers: DOTM, and the last Harry Potter film.

I'm not going to argue that there weren't any bad films in 2011. It had a lot of awful stinkers, and no mistake. But anyone who thought that there weren't enough good films this year simply wasn't paying attention.

Thor was awesome and The King's Speech sounds horrifying.

My argument about 2011 being a weak year for film is that in most years, people have a film to get behind on. Last year, you had competition between The Social Network, The King's Speech, Black Swan and Inception. This year? Nothing really. Sure, there have been films that have gotten a lot of praise but nothing where I've heard people have great arguments about which film should win an Oscar or which film is really the best of the year.

I'll admit that htis year I haven't seen as many films as I would like. As you will see on my list, there's a lot of stuff I'm still missing that I would love to see. I'll say this, though, popcorn flick wise it actually was a pretty good year. I'm very excited about 2012 in terms of film, but thinking about it, it might be a year that's heavy on the quality of popcorn films, but it could also be a year where the line between art and entertainment completely disappears.

Here is my list...for now.

BEST:
The Disapperance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Although really a 2010 film)
Evangelion 2.22: You can (not) advance (Although really a 2009 film)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
X-Men: First Class
Source Code
Hugo
Beginners
Submarine
Super 8
Sucker Punch

Would like to see:
Drive
Contagion
Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol
Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
The Adventures of Tin Tin
The Muppets
We Need to talk about Kevin
Melancholia
Moneyball
War Horse
Young Adult
The Descendants
The Tree of Life
Midnight in Paris
Your Highness
Attack the Block
Captain America
Bridesmaids
Thor
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Take Shelter
The Artist
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
A Dangerous Method
Hanna
The Skin I Live In
The Adjustment Bureau
Unknown
Warrior
(And more I'm sre I'm missing)

First of all, the four films you mentioned are movies that people actually saw. They all got wide theatrical releases and they all made money. As I've stated before, the same can only be said of precious few among 2011's best films. Then again, there's still time to change that, which brings me to my second point.

The awards season is still very young. After this year passes and the Oscar nominations have been passed around, I guarantee you that the "year's best" debates will begin in earnest.

You do have a point there, though. A lot of the films you've praised haven't really gotten wide releases or have been truly accessible to people. If they had been, it'd probably be a different story. As it stands, though, for me the strongest point of the year has been in the summer. But then again, there's still a lot of stuff I've yet to see that I want to. And my list seems pretty extensive to what I usually do most years.

Haven't seen as many films as I would have liked this year, so I won't call this a best-of, but here are some ones that I liked:

Source Code
X Men First Class
The Skin I Live In
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Bridesmaids (probably my favourite film of the year)

I feel like I should give some sort of mention to Tinker Tailor as well, as I thought it was impressive, but I wouldn't say I "enjoyed" it really.

Other films I saw were:
Captain America (I was super excited for this but was kind of underwhelmed)
Thor (Pleasantly surprised, it was good fun)
The Way Back (Beautiful cinematography but overall a little dull, first half of the film was very enjoyable though)

Also probably saw some other stuff I forgot about. I really, really need to see Drive, so I'm probably going to go pick that up on DVD ASAP.

black swan, true grit & the fighter are 2010 films (although i understand since they were december releases in the us they might not have released in the uk until 2011).

also, i don't see drive listed anywhere. that's a problem.
