I actually don't remember the last cartoon movie I saw

Doesn't matter, these days --> Cartoon Movies = 3D Animated Films.

It's the family market, these movies follow the same pattern when treated by studio executives, that means that most likely they will have, as t3cii says, celebrities as voice actors.

If this was a Bone videogame, things might be different, we might get people like DiMaggio and West, but if this movie is going to be funded by a studio, then expect a Kung-Fu Panda-style cast.

To illustrate this point, The Lorax has Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito as its lead roles.

Now I don't know about DeVito, but does anyone really think Efron or Swift really needed to be in there?

Yeah, when I say cartoons I'm also throwing in 3D animated movies.

Exactly. Swift isn't even an actress. It would be okay if her voice was distinct, like Macy Gray for example, but if I were to just hear her voice, I'm not sure I'd be able to recognize her. You can probably blame Robin Williams in Aladdin for this, although he was at least capable of doing voices like the Genie. But it makes me wonder who the studios are trying to sell to? Does it really matter if Steve Carell is in a movie? Is he even someone who most kids would be familiar with?

The Secret World of Arrietty? Last I checked, Bridgit Mendler and David Henrie weren't marquee names. I should also point out the upcoming Brave (Kelly MacDonald, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, et al.) and ParaNorman (Kodi Smit-McPhee, Leslie Mann, Casey Affleck, et al.), both of which have casts that are heavy on talent that are somewhere just under the A-list.

But let's try to be more relevant with regards to the Bone movie, shall we? According to Wikipedia, the adaptation is being set up under Warner Bros, whose recent cartoon adaptations of DC Comics have been cast with celebrities who are very well-suited for their roles. The movie is also being produced by Animal Logic, the group most famous for Happy Feet and Legend of the Guardians. The latter movie actually gives me hope, as the animation was amazing and the voice cast was solid (though I did have my misgivings about the script).

Funnily enough, I'm also seeing involvement from Lin Pictures, a Warner Bros. company that was somehow involved with both Sherlock Holmes movies, Terminator: Salvation, The Invention of Lying, The Box, and quite a few other films. All of them live-action. Interesting...

Anyway, my point is that it's far too early to expect the worst. At this stage of development, given the people and companies that we know to be attached, I see no reason to think that the production will just slap together a voice cast out of whatever A-listers will take a paycheck. Not yet, anyway.

Anime =/= Cartoon Movies & 3D Animated Films.

No one saw that. That is not in league with anything out of Pixar.

How about Will Arnet, Amy Poehler and Carol Burnett? They're in the movie too.

Both of whom have a ton of award wins/nominations under their belts.

Know what all of these people you bring up have in common? They're all well known actors. I'm sorry, but you're going to have to come up with some better examples. None of these people are in the Frank Welker category, they're known primarily for their acting, whereas someone like him is known specifically for his voice work.

Oprah, Terrence Howard and John Goodman were in it. I think you and Curi are misunderstanding my point. When I say stars I'm not nesearrily talking about Brad Pitt and George Clooney. I'm talking about actors who are not know primarily for doing voice work. If this were a television show, it would be different. But because this is a movie, we're probably going to get a recognizable name or two. If we do get someone known strictly for their voice work, it will be in a minor part.

I wouldn't mind if John Goodman voiced Lucius. I really don't have a problem with bgger names doing voice work when it works and is done well, that is just not the case often enough.

John Goodman is perfect for Bone, but he sounds a little odd to me for Lucius, Goodman has a very deep voice which makes him sound.............fatter......than he actually is. I was thinking perhaps him for The Great Red Dragon, but I'm also unsure about that.

This is my point exactly.

Too many animated films like "Despicable Me," "Madagascar," or any of the Dr. Seuss adaptations in recent memory (I'm thinking of Lorax and Horton in particular) just ask "Which celebrities can we get?" instead of asking "Who's best for the part?" I think we can all agree that we don't want Bone to be one of those movies.

However, I will happily concede that a few big names may be necessary to secure funding for this enormous project, and also to lure in those unfamiliar with the source material. I ask only that the PTB give every role to the best-fitted actor, whether famous or unknown.

Looking at WB Animation's recent adaptations of DC Comics, I think they've been very skilled overall at picking out celebrities who are well-fitted for the roles (Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Bryan Cranston as James Gordon, Summer Glau as Supergirl, etc.), while also casting lesser-known voice actors where necessary (Kevin Conroy, Tim Daly, need I say more?).

Bottom line: Barring any further evidence to the contrary, I see no reason to panic about the voice cast for this movie.

I think that's too broad of a statement, the latest bunch of DC animated movies have been under Bruce Timm's wing more than they have been under WB.

I have to disagree here, I thought Carell, Segel, and even Brand were all very enjoyable.

Is it too much to hope for Timm as an exec producer?

Wait, Timm as an Exec Producer for Bone? I highly doubt that happening.

I have to agree with you Brooks, they were all pretty good, and they didn't just "talk", they all modified their voices for the part and aren't actually recognisable.
shame I actually though Despicable Me was pretty poor.
