Oh dear me... what a let down.

All the actors tried valiantly to hold up a film that creaked louder than the creakiest timbers in the ol' Ark.

3/10
avoid.

My review.

Basically, I thought that this film got the big things right, like the fascinating theological and philosophical concepts on a massive scale. But when it came to the smaller things, like giving us characters worth following, it came up short.

A big problem is that Russell Crowe gave the entirely wrong performance. If he had played Noah with any of the paranoia or frustration that he brought to John Nash, this might have been great. As it is, he goes through the entire movie with the same expression of deranged lunacy, defiantly resisting any show of weakness. That doesn't exactly make for a sympathetic protagonist.

I think, from what I have read, you are in the minority on this one. 3/10 is awful, Twilight levels of bad. I find it hard to believe a movie without a google montage could possibly deserve a 3/10, unless it was directed by Uwe Boll that is.

Would I be wrong if I assumed that you always must find a protagonist sympathetic in order to really enjoy a movie or consider it good?
I didn't find Noah to be unsympathetic at all. If anything, the movie gets you to see and understand things from his perspective, which is what is most valuable. As he descends into insanity (in a way), our symapthies lie with all other characters. It's pretty close to being a biblical version of The Shining in that regard and I thought it worked.

Well, given the subject matter and the directorI was hoping for a bit of Fountain-esque dream-like wonder and beauty, perhaps some of that magical open-endedness which would have suited an old testament tale so well.
Instead it was like Genesis Of The Rings, complete with Nephilim-Ents and the battle of Ark's Deep.

I enjoyed the western-magic take on the Creation, where a 'day' is millions of years, and some of the Jan Svankmajer-like stop motion. But the rest of it was pretty horrible and largely predictable and I felt it was a wasted opportunity to breathe some excitement into the genre.
