The story in Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist centers on the master of Ken and Ryu, Gouken, who himself trained under ‘Asatsuken (Assassin's Fist)' grandmaster Goutetsu. Also training under Goutetsu was the legendary Street Fighter villain, Akuma, who is Gouken's brother. In the web series Gouken reflects on how the Asatsuken sent he and his brother down conflicting paths of 'Light' and 'Dark' and whether he should pass along all of its secrets to Ken and Ryu. Will the same split that befell Gouken and Akuma occur with Ken and Ryu?

In addition to portraying Gōki/Akuma, Joey Ansah (The Bourne Ultimatum) served as director and co-wrote the script with Ken actor Christian Howard. Togo Igawa (Memoirs of a Geisha, The Last Samurai) will portray grandmaster Goutetsu. Mike Moh (Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight) plays Ryu. Hal Yamanouchi (The Wolverine) will portray Senzo. Akira Koieyama (Rush, 47 Ronin) plays Gouken. Mark Killeen (Game of Thrones) plays Ken's father.

Details, please? It's got too much star power for a fan film, and too little fanfare for a studio-backed effort, so what is this and why is it getting made?

Why do these Street Fighter movies never have any actual street fighting tournament?

that would be about as entertaining as having a dragonball film solely taking place at a martial arts world tournament.

which would still be loads better than dragonball evolution.

Apples and oranges, WJK. The Street Fighter tournament isn't just limited to a single ring, it's an international tournament. The whole world is the ring. That's the point of the games.

Isn't the first Mortal Kombat movie centered around a fighting tournament?

i think it works for mortal kombat because imo mk universe is weaker than street fighter

SF characters like ken/ryu,guile,chun li,etc

have such strong background and arcs that it doesn't need to solely be tournament based stories

look at animated movies like street fighter alpha for example

Well, Mortal Kombat never had any pretense about how batshit it is. Between all the magic, cyborgs, parallel universes, monsters, higher powers, and gruesome fatalities, that franchise was ridiculously over-the-top from the word go.

Compare that to Street Fighter, which seems to have a much harder time establishing its tone. The folks behind Legend of Chun-Li learned this the hard way, when they took the whole "M. Bison transferred his conscience into his daughter, which is why he's pure evil" plot point and tried to shoehorn it into an otherwise semi-realistic world.

Isn't this also true of Street Fighter? The characters might have different backstories, but the basic premise is there is a street fighting tournament. I don't think the latest Street Fighter movies (not including the animes) even involved street fighting. Isn't E Honda a news cameraman, Dhalsm a scientist? At least with Mortal Kombat the characters are there for the tournament, and it's tied in with the story.

If I was asked to write a Street Fighter movie, I'd make it about Bison organizing a kind of "Amazing Race" type of game, against time, with the characters made to go around the world and fight each other, slowly realizing they are being forced into some kind of trap. I'd want to make it as cool and emotional as the anime, though. And as a heightened reality, think of a Dragon Ball Z movie if it was made properly. Come on, it has characters like Blanka and powers like Hadouken, it can't be gritty and realistic and if I remember correctly, the JCVD movie didn't even feature Hadouken (I don't know why I found it so enjoyable as a kid, though. Now, I think the "Change the channel!" joke is pretty funny.)

No, I'd think that the more fantastic elements should be introduced gradually. Start with the Hadoken, for example, then build it up with intrigue about what Bison's up to. Before you know it, Blanka's on the screen, Guile's throwing Sonic Booms, Bison's Psycho Drive is a serious threat, and all the more realistic characters are going "How the hell did we get mixed up in this?"

Yeah, I can totally get behind that.

This web series looks awful.
Street Fighter is a colorful globe-trotting beat-em-up.
Not this. *eyeroll*
