Joe Carnahan(Narc,The Grey) Is In Talks To Direct 70's Era Thriller Dare Devil
Image
Quote:
Fox is in discussions with Joe Carnahan to direct what’s been described as a “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller” take on blind Hell’s Kitchen superhero Matt Murdock — a vision that would deviate from Disney/Marvel’s family-friendly tone. Carnahan has yet to receive an official offer, though multiple sources tell Variety that he’s the choice.

but there is a catch
Quote:
But Fox also has something Marvel wants: Sources say Marvel would give Fox more time to make DAREDEVIL in return for the rights to use characters from the FANTASTIC FOUR universe, including the giant, world-devouring supervillain Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics. Marvel is also eyeing future use of Silver Surfer, who in the comicbooks brokered a deal to serve as Galactus’ herald in order to save his home planet. (Fox owns rights to the Silver Surfer as part of its deal for FANTASTIC FOUR, which the studio is also rebooting with CHRONICLE helmer Josh Trank.) At this point, the ball is said to be in Fox’s court, with talks expected to resume later this week. But as of right now, Fox needs to start lensing by the Oct. 10 deadline to keep DAREDEVIL in-house. Neither Fox, Marvel nor reps for Carnahan would comment on the dealings.

So Fox is being forced to choose between a Fantastic Four reboot or a Daredevil reboot. Well played, Marvel.

Back to the matter at hand, FUCK YES. Between Carnahan's work on The A-Team and The Grey, I can't wait to see what an R-rated ultraviolent comic book film from him could look like.

Kind of surreal how Fox and Marvel have essentially switched places in the last couple of years. This news coupled with the announcement that Fox is letting Matthew Vaugn direct an adaptation of the rather bleak "Day of Future Past" is absolutely ballsy--and fucking exciting as well.

As a huge Daredevil fan... I will never trust Fox with another Daredevil related movie...

Even with all its perceived faults--and yes, there are a lot of them--I found First Class to be far more entertaining than anything Marvel put out that year.

Also helps that it had something none of those movies had: a good villain.

i felt more for loki than i did for shaw. it also doesn't help that they're two separate types of villains, so your argument is invalid.

Update, from deadline.com

"While Joe Carnahan has come to the studio with a take [on Daredevil], it sounds like Fox is ready to let it revert to Disney-owned Marvel, unless Disney is interested in co-financing. That is what the current talks are really about."

separate types? Look, a superhero film is only as good as the conflict it presents; and while Loki may have been one of the more sympathetic villains, Shaw actually felt like a threat--which is more than I can say for Loki or any of the other villains in a marvel film.

So Fox is that determined to spite Marvel, huh?

I really hope that as soon as Disney get's the rights... they call Carnahan and begin production on a Daredevil movie.

^That would just be fucking perfect, wouldn't it? Disney gets to make the great film and the money that Fox could've made, all for characters that Fox wasn't going to do anything with anyway.

But let's play devil's advocate. Assuming that the rumors are true and Fox is letting the rights lapse, this is actually the best strategic move. Given what we know about Avengers 2 (Thanos), Thor 2 (taking place mostly in Asgard and the other mystical realms), and Guardians of the Galaxy, it seems obvious that Marvel is trying to take their cinematic universe into stranger and more fantastic places. Silver Surfer and Galactus seem to fit with that approach better than Daredevil would.

From a moviegoer's perspective, acquiescing to Marvel's request would result in an outstanding Daredevil film and a much more epic MCU. From a spiteful bastard's perspective, sacrificing something that nobody wants to keep something that the competition seems to want more badly is a worthy trade.

There is a downside, however: Fox is now in a very desperate need to get a Silver Surfer movie in front of cameras ASAP. Otherwise, the rights will just end up reverting further down the line anyway, making this all for naught. Fox will have lost so many Marvel characters and gained nothing for it, when they could have lost fewer characters and potentially gotten a hit franchise in the bargain.

Yeah, Marvel has forced Fox into a very fine pickle indeed.

If Fox decides to let Daredevil go, I dearly hope that Marvel finds a way to make it work. I'd be very interested to see how they could weave heroes like Daredevil and Punisher into the MCU, providing a grittier balance against the more lighthearted films they've been putting out. Making the two approaches mesh would be a challenge, of course, but I'm sure they could make it work.

I would love to see a team up movie with Daredevil and Punisher

Marvel should try to strike a deal to co-finance FF ,but with complete creative control. Yeah not the ideal, but it would give chane for the use of FF while the rights are elsewhere.Half the investment, half the profits.

As to DD,hoping it comes home and Marvel starts a new wave of movies with him,the Punisher and Blade. Some R-rated equilibrium is direly needed.

i dont want fox to get DD back i think fox would make a more ambitious film the fact that it is based on miller's born again and set in the 1970's enforces that don't think marvel would ever do such a thing

anyways my choice for DD is Dexter Himself 8-)

great actor
can easily play the dark tormented soul of DD

Considering that Dexter is 2 sesons short of it's conclusion, do not see him getting the gig at Fox...

Is it really ambitious to actually try and do justice to Miller's run? Yes it was the very early 80s, but that's a pretty good description of Miller's work and most of the DD stuff after him.
