My real question is, if Han Solo is in, then where will this take place in continuity ? Will we see Han the smuggler ? Or New Republic politician Solo ?

Or will they just ditch the extended universe ? And what will happen with the fans and the franchise then ?

Since Ford seems set on returning to the role, we're most likely looking at something closer to the New Republic, it would be silly not to follow that storyline.

Of course, whatever the settings of this trilogy is they will be writing all over the EU anyway.

Then again, the EU isn't canon to begin with, so technically it doesn't matter.

Of course it's not canon NOW when we have three movies on the horizon

never has been

this also isn't the first time EU material has been written over by something that became canon (the clone wars pretty much made all of karen traviss' republic commando novels pointless... not that they were all good or anything, but she added a lot to the mandalorian mythology).

To be fair, any direct continuation of the original trilogy would have to address the Han/Leia union. Naturally, that involves checking in on any kids they've had. Furthermore, it would seem logical that the grandkids of Darth fucking Vader would be powerfully gifted in the Force, and would therefore be quite prominent among the struggling resurgence of the Jedi.

I don't like it any more than you do, folks, but there's just no getting around this: One way or another, the Solo progeny are going to play some vital role in the franchise going forward. My proposal for a best-case scenario: Leia and Han have a son who acts as a partner for our real protagonist.

it seems that's the direction they're going with, the original trio is returning, but will be more supporting role than main role.

my complaint is, how the hell are they going to sum up 30 years that quickly? unless they've got some plans for another tv show or maybe set of books, i'm not sure how i feel on this one. funny enough, 2017 will be a new hope's 40th birthday.

We did pretty good starting on Episode IV.

And obviously, that gap will be "The Clone Wars" all over again.

Yes, there will be children.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/18/ ... -solo-kids

So, if they follow Star Wars extended universe ideas (which they are likely to do unless they want to incur "J.J.-level Star Trek-scale nerd-wrath), we will meet Mara Jade, Anakin, Jaicin, Jaina and Luke...

So, it must be asked at some point before the movie comes out:

What about............this guy ?

Boba Fett is supposedly going to get a spinoff film, as he should, people have been trying to do that for years.

George Lucas even said that he didn't die in Jedi, and was going to put in a scene that included him escaping from the Pit of Carkoon only to watch the falcon leaving the planet, but that took away from the film. So, he could show up. Not only that, but if they go with the whole darth caedus line, then he'd have to show up, seeing as jaina receives training from him in order to beat her brother.

I would like for him to do something more than just appear, like...................assume an important supporting role.

I mean, he is arguably the Star Wars character with the biggest following.

Mark Hamill is the best. Too bad with Lucas involved it's going to be another CGI shitfest.

Ironically, one of the new trilogy's main selling points is the (alleged) non-involvement of Lucas.

No, I'd be much more worried about J.J. Abrams. How does he feel about practical effects, I wonder?

I don't have anything against cgi, it's just the technology's gross overuse in movies that aren't good anyway that irks me. Mind you, Episode III was pretty damn good.

At least he uses sets as well. Episode's 2 and 3 were 90% CGI. The other 10% being the main cast of actors.

That news story just updated. The screenwriter has denied any involvement, though that doesn't necessarily prove anything.

The only thing we know for sure right now is that Disney is putting all of its Star Wars eggs into one basket. Episode VII is the only film with any real forward momentum right now, so any other SW news should be taken with a grain of salt.
