So I´m on a Annapurna marathon(really like the idea of a billionair going all Medici in Hollywood and saying "fuck the studios"). The Master and Zero Dark Thirty down, decided to check some more stuff, with Killing Them Softly and Lawless being next. But then I found out this:

The concept of going from Phoenix+P.T. Anderson+birth of scientology and Jessica Chastain+Bigelow+ hunt of bin Laden to Gomez+Benson+Spring Break is one big mindfuck.Talk about having a wide catalog

I´m getting a distinct Alpha Dog vibe, and since I liked that, I´m in. And Franco over top. His face at 1:09 in the international trailer is worth the price of ticket alone lol

And yeah, bikinis and booties. It´s what life is about...

Hey, the women got Magic Mike last year. Now it's the guys' turn.

I suspect these movies aren't exactly in the same vein.

Harmony Korine wrote "Kids", which was sort of the shocking movie of its day. I have a feeling it will be similar in that it will be more concerned with the visuals (young, attractive people getting into mischief) than actual story. Apparently when Korine pitched the idea to James Franco, he sent him a bunch of photos he found of young people going on their spring break. So this movie is almost like those images brought to life. There is a certain amount of hedonism that I associate with spring break (although I think spring break is a bigger thing in the U.S), young people getting drunk, doing drugs, having sex. And I think that's what he's interested in. I have a feeling this probably won't be a cautionary tale, but instead, more like an exploitation film. I think part of the movie's story involves these girls robbing stores so they can get the cash to go on spring break, and the image of girls doing stick up is sort of a grind house image:

Harmony Korine also made a film called "Trash Humpers," which is even more crazy than you'd think from the title. I think you're onto something, t3cii.

Shit, am I the only one that can see the similarities with Alpha Dog, instead of Magic Mike? As it is the selling point at play, atleast for me, is the delusion in their heads and how amoral they can get to live the dream. Plus, chicks with guns and knifes :D

But with Alpha Dog, it´s similar, because in both cases we see the effects of people focusing too hard on living pop fantasies(AD was the thug life, the way of the gangsta, while SB is about how "alternate worlds" like Spring Break become the real world, although I can see Franco´s character also appealing to the thug life trope).

As to t3cii assumptions, it´s part right. They do rob a store at the start of the movie, but it´s just the catalyst to go to spring break. Then it´s there that they meet Alien, and from then on, it´s the american dream at play(although not the traditional one). And he is right on not being a cautionary tale. They say that it has Drive-esque ending, so that means riding off into the sunset deal, no punishment like in Alpha Dog.

Of course Alpha Dog was also based on a true story.

I mentioned Kids earlier, and while I think Spring Breakers might have a more heightened tone, it too is all about these characters enjoying their lives. Kids was controversial because it followed a large group of mostly asshole teenagers living it up in New York City, but didn't really make any judgment against these characters, despite the fact that at one point a large group of them savagely beat a man. The movie too isn't really played as a cautionary tale, even though by the end of the movie, at least three characters end up getting HIV. But what makes the movie compelling is that the characters are completely unguarded in the way they talk and behave. It's like you're eavesdropping on their conversations, and there isn't a moment where you think the filmmakers are holding back.

But there is also a certain fetishizing of youth to the movie. It introduced audiences to Rosario Dawson, and Chloë Sevigny, and there are (as far as I can recall) no adult characters in the movie. Some felt it was glorified child pornography, even though I don't think there was any nudity in it. Although, as you'll see in the trailer, you get shots of shirtless guys pumping iron, of teenagers making out, and smoking weed, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myzec1dgSqcAnd looking at promo shots of Spring Breakers, they seem to have a lot of the young stars of the movie in bikinis, hanging out, and drinking. It kind or reminds me of ads for American Apparel, where they have these young models, in sexual provocative photo shoots.

First part, beauty in the eye of the beholder type of thing, but with ears.

Second part, yeah, no kidding. While I think Snipes could have had a better career, the day Whitaker is bested by Snipes, shit is wrong.

The films depict other sides of a similar coin.
Crime, violence, and characters involved in deeper ways than they ever intended.
Alpha Dog's white trash crew are in no way prepared for what they invoke. Ghost Dog's protagonist is prepared every second of every day. Saying 'I'm a Ghost Dog kinda guy' was me being oh-so-self referential to personal history and the fact that I have kept my eyes open and reached this ripe old age relatively unscarred.
