Well, this is disheartening news.

For me, it all comes down to how the next few Marvel films do. If Kenneth Branagh, Joe Johnston and (God forbid) Joss Whedon fail as Louis Leterrier did, then Marvel just lost their only surefire filmmaker. More importantly, the next few films will determine just how much leverage Marvel can use to get a top-tier director: Everyone will want on board this franchise if its success continues, but the ship will sink fast if it sinks at all and everyone will want off mighty quick.

In the meantime, I'd stake my stash of Regal movie passes that RDJ will have his own candidate(s) for Favreau's replacement and I'll be interested to see what stock Kevin Feige puts in those suggestions. It'll be very telling to see just how much influence RDJ has in this matter, for it will say just how much hold Kevin Feige has on this franchise he's supposed to be running.

Allegedly, Downey, Jr. has "contractually negotiated director approval," so his influence is considerable, assuming that bit is true.

anyone got any directors they would like to see direct Iron Man 3?

i think the main guy for me would be Matthew Vaughn, seeing as he's done superhero, and fantasy (which would be important for The Manderin), and has the right sense of humour

More seriously,I would be cool with Verbisnki and Vaughn.Neil Blomkamp would be nice too.Anyone with real talent, not some Len Wiseman kind of director.

I don't think Verbinski has proved himself as a director particularly, especially not an action director, POTC all have such blatantly choreographed fights, which was part of their charm, but I don't see that kind of thing working in a modern comic book movie.
Blomkamp on the other hand is a great idea!

good news, i had heard it as a mere rumour a little while ago, but now it's confirmed i'm very happy with the choice. KKBB was great, and possibly one of the reasons RDJ got the IM gig in the first place, so it's come round full circle, let's just hope he or whoever writes the script if not him, knows what they're doing with IM

I do like the idea of Shane Black doing Iron Man 3. It does make me wonder where will that leave his Death Note adaptation in the mean time.

I'm going to offend a certain person but I would rather he abandon the dn movie to helm a few IM movies... just because I don't care about DN, but I love me some Tony Stark Shenanigans

Why, I on the other hand would want the complete opposite, it doesn't require much talent to do a good IM movie !

But after how absolutely disappointing IM2 was, I kinda want someone to hit it out of the park with the third movie. Shane Black seems to be the one to do it.
