Jason Reitman. If you haven't seen "Thank You For Smoking" or Juno yet, get off your asses.

Neil Blommkamp. A South African director who's made some fascinating short films. He was attached to adapt Halo as his feature film debut before that project fell apart. It's an absolute shame that he hasn't broken into Hollywood yet, but I'll be first in line for my ticket when he does.

Guillermo Del Toro. This man is a fucking genius.

Christopher Nolan. Yes, Batman Begins was awesome. But after Memento and The Prestige, I consider him and his brother Jonathan to be master storytellers.

Rob Reiner. His newer stuff is terrible, but he had some real comedic skill back in the 80s or so.

Peter Jackson - Lord of the Rings was golden, and Lovely Bones (one of the best books ever) looks like it's coming along very well.

Alfonso Cuaron - Children of Men. Enough said.

Darren Aronofsky - Pi, Requiem for a Dream (his best), The Fountain - all great to a degree.

Quentin Tarantino - Overrated, but a hell of a lot of fun. Kill Bill was great.

Christopher Nolan - Duh.

Frank Darabont - Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, and now The Mist; Farenheit 451 can't come soon enough!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and David Finch is great, of course.
EDIT 2: And Joel and Ethan Coen. Especially No Country for Old Men.

Okay, I didn't bother correcting OP earlier, but seeing as the mistake is seemingly contagious, it's david fincher. Finch was a character in V for Vendetta. And yes, Curi, Del Toro is amazing. I can't wait for Hellboy II and the dozen films he's got planned afterwards (hopefully including the hobbit)
which brings me back to Fincher: a great reference to Se7en in Total Film's latest article on the Hobbit

He has directed quite a few good movies in his day. Among them:

Stand by Me
The Princess Bride
A Few Good Men
Misery
When Harry met Sally

His features going back to 1990:

The Bucket List (2007)...which I can't wait to see.
Rumor Has It... (2005)...a cute comedy.
Alex & Emma (2003)...haven't seen this one.
The Story of Us (1999)...Fantastic. A great drama about marriage and love and the difference. Truly moving.
Ghosts of Mississippi (1996)...Powerful.
The American President (1995)...Liked it.
North (1994)...didn't see it.
A Few Good Men (1992)...loved it. One of the best courtroom dramas ever.
Misery (1990)...Wow!

Not sure what you mean by "newer stuff" Curi. Or if you are mainly talking about his comedies... in which case I'd agree that Rumor Has It certainly isn't as good as When Harry Met Sally. But comedy is only part of his game. The guy makes some of the best dramatic stuff ever.

I was thinking from "Alex and Emma" onwards.

"The American President." *slaps forehead* How could I have forgotten that movie? That was a good one.

Am I the only fan here of Stanley Kubrick?

He's an excellent filmmaker, but all of his films have a way of making me feel uncomfortable, even squeemish, so I don't revel in him like I would a Speilberg or a Rob Reiner or a John Huston.

By the way, nobody mentioned John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen)

Kubrick is great with actors and cinematography, but his editing sucks. Shots go on for way too long, endings drag on and on, etc.

Not a big Kubrick fan. He's OK. If you like being beaten about the head and torso with whatever theme was on his mind... but not a favorite for me. Too heavy handed. Too drawn out.

I like a filmmaker who has the confidence to try and sneak it by me. Make me work for my enjoyment.

I just watched CIDER HOUSE RULES again. Great movie.

Another non-Kubrick fan here. Really, really just... detached from subtlety and quality. Different is not always good. Also not a Scorsese fan. I found The Departed and Goodfellas to be intensely mediocre, despite the huge response to them. I did enjoy Taxi Driver, though.

I agree, Veidt. The Departed was a pretty mediocre film. Some nice acting talent. Nothing remotely unique, entertaining, or interesting about the story. I was stunned that it won the Oscar. It was mindless.

Yeah, it's this prevailing trend today where if something is an intense, realistic drama, it's immediately considered a masterpiece, especially if it deals with organized crime. The Godfather, Goodfellas, The Departed, Casino, Scarface, and (most recently) American Gangster - movies where such tired devices as 'themes' and 'style' are traded in for an all-star cast, 'deep' acting, and a linear plot with few surprises.

I am never going to forgive Scorcese for giving me Gangs of New York. I'd like to "give" it back to him inside something similar to a pineappple.

The superbly consistent Billy Wilder tops my list.

Odd. It seems like there's a major rift at this forum between the older/younger people and who/what they like.

I've only seen 1 Kubrick film and I like it a lot (2001: A Space Odyssey). I have a feeling I'll like the rest of his movies based on the fact that I like his style. His obscurity teeters on being too much, but I like decoding and interpreting.

I've only seen 3 Scorcese films and I like them all (Taxi Driver, Gangs of NY, and The Departed). Taxi Driver is just what it is, Gangs of NY is stellar, and The Departed may not deserve all the hype it got, but it's a damn solid movie.
