Anyone else read Black Summer by Warren Ellis and Juan Jose Ryp?
It's an amazing, violent, twisted superhero "event" book without the usual multitude of tie-ins and years of continuity knowledge needed to "get it".
Mainly because Warren and Juan created it all in an 8 issue (#0, 1-7) self contained mini-series. Must say, it kicks all kinds of ass!
The Motives Behind The Masks Of Black Summer"If we invite or condone masked adventurers to fight crime outside the law, do we get to draw a line where they stop? Condoning their activity is much the same as giving them carte blanche to fight crime wherever they perceive it to be. This leads to a much bigger question than, say, asking if superhuman combatants in America should be registered with a Federal agency. In fact, it leads to this:
If a self-identified crimefighter lives in a country where a President can be said to have prosecuted an illegal war and therefore can be said to have killed a great many people in the enactment of his criminal enterprise… What does that masked man do?
If he’s a man using the name John Horus, with the same destructive power as a fleet of Apache helicopters, then the answer is obvious.
And so BLACK SUMMER opens with John Horus killing the President of the United States.
That’s the question. What happens when a superhero’s pursuit of justice leads him to the inexorable conclusion that he must kill his President to save his country?"The series has just finished but is being collected into tpb format at a later date.
