Ok, I think we have, hands down, the best Batman story:

The Long Halloween deals with Two Face quite a bit. So does Dark Victory. I reccomend those if you have'nt read them yet.

In honor of you, tbone, I will bump this thread ;)

I have not read a lot of Batman trades lately though because I've been pretty occupied with the whole Blackest Night arc, but I did recently read "Batman: Ego" by one of my favorite writers/artists Darwyn Cooke.

For anyone who hasn't read it, pick it up. The main story itself is pretty interesting, and a few side stories are very good, like Selina's Big Score (Technically not a Batman Story, but he does appear in a few panels.)

Whilst it's not a graphic novel per se, I enjoy rereading Batman Black & White over and over simply because it's a collection of stories in black and white coloring, which gives, IMO, that 1930s/40s feeling and the whole "detective" scene as well, because that's what Batman is.

YAY :D

So I read Allstar BnR and really liked it. I just liked how everything was overstated and how it was a parody of itself. It was kind of refreshing and different. I wanted to read more after I finished it, so I hope some more is on it's way.

Many people must've already said Miller's "The Dark Knight", I loved it, but I had several issues in how Franky boy took WAY too much liberty with the character, specially with the sequel, but the latter is so bad that it really can't be called a legitimate comic

Technially it's 'The Dark Knight RETURNS' but, yeah DKR is vastly superior to DKSA

Of course, "The Dark Knight Returns" is a solid comic book, even when the annoying Frank and his pseudo-fascist view of the world corrupts the original mold of the characters and the story.

Sorry, had to get that one out

Dead on.

By the way, is "The Killing Joke" any good ? I heard the story behind it's creation from an interview with Alan Moore and it was hilarious as shit, even though Moore says he is not very proud of it.

Read it. There's a reason why it's considered one of the definitive Joker stories.

Along the same vein -- if I haven't already -- I'd recommend Arkham Asylum. There's some great stuff in there from Joker, Two-Face and some other classic Batman villains, with an intriguing psychoanalytical look at the Dark Knight himself. Additionally, there are some great visual motifs pertaining to sexuality, psychology, ancient mythology and Tarot. Hell, the entire comic has outstanding artwork, right down to the lettering. The comic has a blended watercolor look that portrays the asylum as a disturbia in which monsters roam, anarchy reigns, logic has no meaning and insanity is the only safe exit.

So, yeah: Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum. Pick them up now.

That and the fact that it's absolutely hilarious watching a psychotic version of Batman be a complete dick to everyone. I love crazy Frank Miller. He's like that crazed uncle that comes to your family meetings and gets severely drunk. You can't help but love him.

I'll be sure to read Arkham Asylum sometime. That's the only Batman story that I haven't read yet but want to.

Now for the most controversial statements of this thread:

I read Arkham Asylum awhile back and hated it. Particularly the art, the story was decent, but I couldn't stand the art, which in a comic is half the overall book.

And I read ASBnR and loved it I found it to be a more realistic take on Batman than a lot of the 'realistic' batman stuff I've read. Mainly, because a guy who watched his parents die in front of him, then goes off and secludes himself from any grieving/recovery process, only to then return and start fighting crime dressed as a bat would not be a nice guy. He'd be out of his fucking mind.

As amazing as Adam West was at Batman, the character in the realworld would be so much more like Rorschach than any body wants to admit. Instead of being the 'don't swear/don't kill guy' I think you'd have the Dirty Harry in a cowl that Miller gave us... technically in DKR.

Now I'm not saying ASBnR is the greatest Batman story ever, but it's a fun ride. Still I say DKR is the best Batman story for so many reasons
