Anyone have any thoughts on Harvey Pekar and his chain of books? I picked it up at the library the other day and found some stories interesting, but I felt I wasn't really "getting it", at least in light of how much praise he seems to have recieved for the stories. Everything just seemed to be really ordinary and pointless.

Or was that supposed to be the point? Any help here?

To be honest....I picked this up after seeing the film, and I must say I found the books kinda banal (for lack of a less harsh word) and enjoyed the film a lot more. I know the film isn't a straight adaptation but still...

Maybe I've just got too much of a crush on Giamatti.

I loved the film...I intend to check out the comics at some point...
I'd think they revolve around the character...if you empathise with Harvey and what's happening to him you enjoy the books.

I've only seen the film, but Pekar comes off as too aggresively real. His hatred for anything phony or light seems like a put-on in itself, or forced. Anyway, check out his friend in the low budget nightmare 'Killer Nerd'. It's a lot more entertaining.

I loooove American Splendor. I’m into biographies and history etc. so what is essentially a diary in comic form, that’s just magic to me. I’m not surprised that no one here cares for it though, it’s definitely an acquired taste.
