It hit me like a brick when I saw these covers.... "Wow...they were serious." Somehow, I didn't quite believe it until today.

Boycott.

The Crimson Corsair and Rorschach ones look like fan-art/bad jokes (tough guy Rorschach inside the mask?? Shudderr). The others, I think, are quite beautiful in their own way. My favourite would be the Comedian cover. Pretty sick n' twisted, looks like there will be no punches pulled there...

But yeah. Seeing these as a reality is very, very strange.

Honestly, I really like the covers. My radar pinged a little when I noticed that the bloody arrow was on the Comedian's wrong eye, but the artwork is otherwise very impressive.

I'm particularly interested to learn more about this Crimson Corsair. Will this be a completely new character, or is DC digging deeper into the Black Freighter? At this point, I'd consider both to be equally possible.

Seriously? That's one of the best ones.

I really dislike the cliched grumpy-pose, with what looks like steam coming out of his ears, he's so grumpy! And having such a detailed drawing inside the mask.... plus it has that 90's grunge cover thing going on. Too many 'meh's.

Dude, I'm so tempted. There is too much talent here for it to be horrible, I really see worse case scenario these will be good. We all know these won't equal the original, but I doubt they will be bad.

it's worse if you see it in HD, and zoom in on the shape of the face and notice there is ANOTHER Rorschach inside!

but i do actually think it's pretty cool, and it's not that detailed anywhere but the face, and i think the recurrence is cool.

I've been a bit disappointed by a lot of JMS's most recent work, but Kubert And Son are enough to make me buy every issue of that mini.

yes you are right, it's the Minutemen one missing from the article, and the Nite Owl one missing from the forum post.

I think it's one of the worst. It's a bit fan poster-y to me. When the Watchmen movie was in pre production, I came up with a poster idea where it was a closeup of Rorschach's mask with the ink blots forming the other characters in the story. Here his blots form...himself? That's stupid. Rorschach's blots often made distinct images such as the Hiroshima Lovers, or a butterfly. They could used any number of images relevant to watchmen. The execution is also off.

The Comedian cover is a bit boring.

Ozzy looks pretty cool. The color scheme really brings to life Jae Lee's illustration. But I think Lee would make a better cover artist that illustrator. I find his style to be a bit muddy, and I'm not sure he's able to do animation. What I mean is, in Watchmen, Gibbons had characters moving from panel to panel, interacting with each other, etc. With Lee, especially his work on the Dark Tower comics, his drawings just look like good poster art. They kind of just sit there, and don't quite mesh with the word balloons the way most comics do.

The Jon and Laurie cover looks like one of those animations that you would sometimes see a few years back on television (like the computer animated Spider-Man), where the color and lighting scheme is realistic, and the characters don't use as many hard lines, while at the same time still needing to be outlined just so they don't disappear into the background.

The pirate comic looks like the type of illustration you'd find in a Heavy Metal magazine, which is kind of cool.

The Minutemen cover is a nice bit of traditional illustration, and reminds me of BTAS. It's probably the one issue I have very little interest in reading, though.

Silk Spectre cover is probably the best.

And Nite Owl II looks like he's about to take a dump on that chimney.

Ugh. My moderator doesn't even read the main site articles!

“Before Watchmen,” as it is being called, will also have its own “Tales of the Black Freighter” with a new “comic within the comic” title “Curse of the Crimson Corsair.”This new pirate tale will unravel throughout each issue and title of the series.

I don't think it's supposed to be literal. It's like the Ozy cover, he's not actually going to levitate.

AYB, you need to back me up here since we fangasmed all over this.

That really doesn't explain much, DDC.

I'm not sure that contradicts my point. It's still a dumb design. In fact, they could have just used any random ink blot design and it would have worked better visually. Maybe if the blots weren't so perfect, it wouldn't look so amateurish.

What? Is it that I mistakingly said "Silk Spectre" instead of "Silk Spectre II", or that I think it's the best cover of the bunch?
