Rorschach died as soon as he screamed "DO IT!" in the graphic novel. The same for the film. Nothing indicating Manhattan regaining any humanity. The scene played out exactly as it did in the graphic novel. A perfect reincarnation. Haley beats Ledger if you ask me.

Correct my if I'm wrong, but in the GN there is not hesitation from Manhattan after Rorschach's final "Do it!". It was just like in the movie.

He does turn around and the look on his face just before "DO IT!" when he's taking off his mask is gut-wrenching in the novel!

That is one of the panels I would love to get tattooed - my boyfriend just thinks it will be amusing having to explain why I have a tattoo of a screaming ginger bloke ;)

Just got back from watching it a second time, and it is an amazing scene, so beautifully done. I went with 5 friends who hadnt read the GN, and all of them fell in love with Rorschach and were pretty moved when he died

Agreed, Ledger mainly just scared me, JEH as his character did so much more, it was astounding. I swear through out his scene's I went through every range of emotion.

I also enjoyed the subtlety of the music, I helped make the scene for me.

How I cried at this part! I think it's the best scene in the movie, I just hate the fact it's Rorschach dying even though it's an exceptionally beautiful scene... my friend [non fan] turned to me when Rorschach was speaking to Dr. M and was like "Oh no, Rorschach's not going to die is he?"... and when he did she simply said: "Oh God". There's nothing like hearing a reaction like that from someone who was convinced they would hate the movie beforehand. The same friend keeps saying now, days after seeing it that she loved Rorschach and keeps looking through my mountain of Watchmen books! As far as i'm concerned, love or hate the movie, i've seen plenty of evidence for it introducing the original graphic novel to new people.

And personally, I'm quite moved by Dan's reaction to Rorschach's death. I didn't find his scream remotely off putting and despite the fact it was added in for the film I think it worked, in fact I found his relationship with Rorschach quite moving in general.... but this is coming from a completely obsessed fangirl who spent most of the movie 'sqee'ing at them both lol :D

I love that scene. Just watched the whole movie again on watch-movies-links. Still kinda wish rorschach's explosion had a little more "oomph" to it though. I know, I'm picky...

Honestly, I think the main improvement the Movie made on the Graphic Novel was having Dan witness Rorschach's death. When I read the Graphic Novel it seemed as though Dan completely forgot about Rorschach and shacked up with Laurie, but in the Movie it just made so much more sense to have him actually witness it and take out his anger on Veidt.

Yet I keep watching it 'cause it's such a beautiful scene.

I agree completely. Each time I've watched the film the sadness in me transfers over to Dan as soon as Rorschach dies. He just looks so helpless and (of course) impotent when his beating fails to have the desired effect on Veidt.

I wonder what made Veidt's skin so tough and resistant...

I had a hard time trying to convince my friends that Adrian had no superpowers. I told them he was just at peak human ability, but I guess this was more believable in the GN than in the movie. The second jump really looks superpowered or Jedi-like.

As horrible of a film as it was, I thought of the Catwoman movie and the female antagonist at the end, who made use of skin care products to increase the toughness of her skin. It made me think of Veidt making use of his company's products to maximize his physique and endurance.

My favorite little thing about that scene is after Rorschach pulls his mask off and dies, Dan pulls his mask and goggles off too. It's a nice little symmetrical gesture that subtly shows that they had a special bond.

I just noticed...what's left of Rorschach is in the exact shape of the Hiroshima couple.

Wow...wow.

That's why I didn't miss his "so impotent" line so much. That line was written all over that scene, and the subsequent scene where he beats Adrian.

Wow, I actually just noticed that. God I need to see this film again.

I honestly think this death scene is likely one of the strongest ones in recent memory when it comes to film. The last powerful ones I can remember were in Se7en and more recently, Pan's Labyrinth. If some mags start making another list, Rorschach's death should be a new entry. JEH, Crudup and Wilson were pitch perfect here.
