i honestly believe general audiences go to movies for good entertainment not to be taught something or to learn. When you see people say there was no action you get your typical movie goer. Who cant keep an attention span if there is no car chase or explosion.Instead we get why is he naked and his cock is always out instead of actually understanding why he is naked.

No its that the majority of movie-goers these days dont watch movies unless there are car chases, explosions, or CG aliens floating across the screen every 5 seconds. The idea that a movie has a compelling story-line, well thought out characters, and runs more than an hour and a half is alien to them. Most prefer Oooh shiny action movies or dick and fart joke comedies.

On the other hand, I took my dad to see it last night (my third time, his first) and despite knowing nothing much about the source material other than the core concept, he ended up really liking it. He even said he wants to watch it again, which blew my mind. I was pretty happy that he "got it" and told me it wasn't confusing and that he didn't even notice how long it was. So it was a good night.

I saw this movie with my Mom, and she had the exact same background of not being familiar with the story or the characters, and she absolutely loved it. She did say she was surprised that it was a drama rather than a bam pow action movie, but she enjoyed that about it.

However, one of the guys I work with only wanted to talk about the blue penis. Shiirow is absolutely right. If something doesn't dazzle someone with explosions or idiotic comedy, most people would rather let it go right over their heads than really think about something. I definitely understand the "group think" mentality though...it's so prevalent in our society it's scary.

seems like we all have lost track of what this thread's about, cause no one noticed what i said previously in this thread. The fact that certain people REFUSE to see this movie WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THE GENERAL PLOT (minus any spoilers from the GN, mind you) is just retarded. THIS IS THE REASON WHY THE MOVIE'S GETTING IT'S ASS KICKED IN THE BOX OFFICE BY AN DISNEY FILM AND AN OVERLY PRETENTIOUS NIC CAGE SCI-FI FILM! Hell, Paul Fart or whatever his lame-ass name is, ends up #1 at the Box Office for TWO WEEKS and it got critically massacred, while Watchmen, the most hyped film of 2009 so far, is #1 for just one week, but gets GLOWING REVIEWS from most critics.

Seriously, guys, something is very WRONG here. And that something is how movies like Paul Whatshisname are affecting how we handle less retarded, more serious, complex, and story-driven films like Watchmen. AND IT'S NOT A GOOD EFFECT AT ALL.

Hate to say it, but Watchmen was pretty much panned by a large majority of critics.

Uhh, no, whichever way you want to spin it Watchmen was neither 'panned' nor did it receive 'glowing reviews from most critics'. It polarised them but there was no clear majority at either extreme. Not that it matters.

I sense a question-like conspiracy here, along the lines of aglets and flouride mouthwash.

Saturday Morning. I was watching a local (spanish) channel. They were doing an entertainment segment in which the co-host said "skip watchmen, it's boring and doesn't make sense. Instead, go watch the new Julia Roberts film." My brother just stared at me knowing how big a fanboy I can be. I called the station and bitched on about how their high school dropout host shouldn't blast an intelligent and thought provoking movie while encouraging her viewers to watch something from someone just because it's "A-list". The lady I talked to aplogized on the host's behalf.

I don't know why I went through the trouble. Maybe someone just needed to put the host on check.

I just hate how mainstream Watchmen is now. I discovered Watchmen through reading the Killing Joke about a year ago. Since I read Watchmen I have become a major fan. I hate it now when I'm like "Watchmen is a great book" and someone goes "yeah man, that book was deep" and then I talk about Ozymandias and they go "Ozymandias is that blonde dude right?"

:(

I don't think the problem is that Watchmen has gone mainstream. Because of this movie, several people will pick up the book and become hardcore fans, though they might not have otherwise. I know this has already happened because many such fans are registered here and I have no doubt that more will come.

The problem is that for every hardcore fan, there are at least twenty people who only think that they're hardcore fans. This is not a new problem. Watchmen was not the first property to have poser fans and it won't be the last.

Moreover, it's important to remember that stupidity should not be confused with ignorance. If some newbie actually enjoys Watchmen and wants to learn more about it, then we should help in that process.

Yeah, you're right :)

I'm just a little grouchy right now with my whole class saying "Rorschach's Journal" every 5 seconds.

Ah, I couldn't care less how popular it is now really. As long as it gets new people interested in reading the GN, I mean, it's a good thing right?
I wouldn't let it bother you that much ^^

Is there anything really wrong with being a new fan? I'm fairly new to Watchmen, but I was really hooked by the book and really enjoyed the movie. You don't have to have been a fan for a decade in order to be hard core.

I think that it's a good thing that people want to read it. Yes, some really ought to read it again (I'm in the process of that) and think about it a little more. I've put in a lot of time thinking about it and discussing it at length with fellow fans in my life. I don't mind that it's a little more main stream. I'm happy that there are people out there now willing to give it a chance, inspired by the movie to see what all this stuff was about and picking up the book. At least it's better than just dismissing the movie as something they don't understand and make no effort to understand.

I welcome people asking me about Watchmen. I welcome the chance to explain the deeper stuff. And I'm even ok if they just want to talk about Rorschach's journal. Just so long as they don't mind some long winded explanations from me, LOL.

Ditto, Biosynth ...

I am a relatively new fan of the GN (and the movie{!!!}). I saw the trailer for it when it first started brewing ages ago. Thought it looked kinda shit to be honest. But I was intrigued. I googled Watchmen and it had a pretty interesting premise, so I picked it up.

And fuck me, did it blow me away which made me totally pumped for the movie.

What I'm saying is, I'm a Watchmen fan as well ... though I've only been one for only about half a year. I believe the messages and themes it conveys resonate with me as they do with long-time fans. That's how awesome it is. That is how awesome an awesome work of art is. It speaks to people from decades ago the same way it will to people who picked it up yesterday.

Kinda off topic. Anyway, to the gym guys. Your opinions are yours and that's ok. And you are douchebags.

The movie ... JUST AWESOME.

I came very close to doing that after listening to Mr. MovieFone's review on a local radio station because he got so many details wrong.

Aren't these contradictory desires? I mean if it's not popular at all no one is going to be directed to read the GN, and if it is vice versa.

I talked to a guy who just got his master's degree in fine art about his take on the movie and he honestly said to me, "..and I can tell you I didn't care for the blue penis." I was just flabbergasted. How can you finish an fine arts studio art masters and not have seen so much naked man member in your life as to not even be phased by that? It just boggles my mind that this guy was so closed minded. It's certainly not cool to like the movie, especially to be indifferent or even happy they put the cock in. You know why I'm happy it's there? 1: It's important to the plot. 2: It's a middle finger to the MPAA and the studios who bend over to them. 3: Friggen A women deserve some cock to oogle at as much as we men deserve titties bouncing about on screen. 4: Manhattan with butt floss on Mars or toward the end would have been retarded. 5: Screw every whiny little tard who gets all little baby over cock and balls. Here I'll take mine out right now and look at it, oh damn doesn't bother me. Here let me look up the visual encyclopedia on penis, oh nope, still nothing, let me check out some porn with some close up in and out, well now I've got my own section of lower Manhattan high rise, so now I have to go.

Oh totally, that's what I meant. I mean It doesn't annoy me that lots of people will be into now, I think it's a good thing if more people are reading the GN.

Ok I guess I didn't read your comment in context to what you were responding to. I agree it's a good thing for more people to read the GN.

That's both baffling and sad. How did he survive life drawing, with old guys' wrinkly old wangs hanging out in the same room as him?
