I prefer aspects of the movie over the book. I prefer aspects of the book over the movie. But in general I love both and it sort of balances out.

This Seinfeld green is confusing me...

Anyway, I think the book is better than the movie but the movie is really great too. It keeps all of the themes intact and makes me smile whenever I see it. :D Obviously, the movie was much more difficult to make. One of many positive things about the movie is that you can watch it and as a result people that would normally never pick up Watchmen could watch the movie and then maybe even read the book out of interest.

I prefer some things infinitely to the book. For example:

The ending.

The changing of the prisoner's lines from "My autograph book" to "Give you an autograph". Makes more sense to me.

The murder of Lawrence. In the book, he's stabbed, but his body is still in the way of the lock (or so it appears). In the movie, his arms are sliced off and his corpse is pushed aside, giving open access to the lock.

The costumes were a DEFINITE improvement in the movie.

The costumes missed the entire point of the costumes in the book, so no, I don't think they were an improvement whatsoever.

Well they were updated to reflect modern superhero conventions. They're equal in the book and movie in my..book.

Care to elaborate?

I mean, obviously Rorschach transitioned beautifully from book to movie, and Manhattan...well, same story. Not too much of a difference from their comic counterparts.

Silk Spectre I and Nite Owl I were direct transitions as well...as for SS II and NO II, the changes in their costumes were for the better. SS's showed off her curves more and NO's honestly just looked more sleek and badass in my opinion. A huge improvement over the comic's.

The Comedian's shoulder pads were a much better touch than the "sleeve" things from the comics. With Ozymandias, I can understand some people's concerns. However, I thought his costume was fantastic and actually looked like a superhero's.

The point is they aren't supposed to look badass. That's why they had shitty costumes in the book. They're normal people, and normal people aren't badass. NOII is supposed to look like a fat nerd, not a badass. Most of the other costumes worked fairly well, but like I said, they're supposed to look kind of goofy.

True. But I feel like that wouldn't have worked out so well. Besides, they still look goofy. It's subjective. Even Rorschach with all of his bad-assery looks goofy from a normal person viewpoint. (not that that describes anyone here) Of course, if you used that reasoning, you could make the case that every superhero looks goofy.

And I've refuted my own argument.

Thank you Thank you very much.

The thing with NO II though is that he was a nice average Joe, he still knew how to kick ass and take names, flabby gut and all. If Moore wanted to present him and SS II as totally goofy and out of shape, they would have lost the fight to the Knot-Tops in the alley. Their victory was proof that there was still a little Crimbuster left in them.

Also, you can still tell Patrick Wilson gained weight as the '85 NO, but when they shot the original Crimebusters (or Watchmen) meeting, he was in good shape. It's subtle, but it's there.

Also, the "normal people" argument could possibly work against the movie's NO II and SS II, but not Ozymandias. He was the world's smartest man with the strength of a god, even after retirement, and I think his costume is extremely reflective of that.

The point about the costumes is that in the book they were meant to be a satire of Silver Age superheroes, whereas in the movie they were a satire of recent superhero films. This explains the nipples on Ozymandias' costume (a la "Batman and Robin").
