Some people legitly think this is a bad movie. I don't get it.
I think adaption gripes aside, it's a good movie. A really good movie.
Am I alone in this?

I'd call it a very interesting movie. I think there are too many flaws for it to be a great. Choppy editing and occasional bad acting to name a couple.

I totally get why some people say it's bad. It is definitly not a movie for everyone, and that is one of the things I like about it.

I really don't see where the bad acting is.
The editing... yeah. I get that.

I don't think it's great, but simply really good.
Better than 'average', better than 'okay', it was really good.

I think he mostly means some of the extras. The knot tops, that one guy screaming that Dr. Manhattan is gone, etc.

I think Crudup and Morgan give the only genuinely good performances, whereas everyone is else is okay to passable.

First, the fact that the two of you didn't mention JEH boggles my mind.

I think all the performances were great except for both Jupiter's. Akerman was flat, and at times (especially under all the age makeup) Gugino seemed to be overacting a la William Shatner.

I don't know, I just thought he was okay. He just didn't really seem schlubby enough to be Dan.

I honestly don't think he gave a good performance. I remember being impressed by him at the time, in that I felt he gave it his all, but I feel the performance is uninspired. Too straightforward, with Haley doing a ridiculous "gritty" voice, and missing the dead pan humor of the character.

Both actresses are miscast. But I actually think Gugino should have played Laurie, and probably would have done well in that role. Since we barely see young Laurie in this movie anyway, I think they could have cast Gugino and just had a different actress play her as a teen.

In retrospect, I would have been okay with Carla Gugino as Sally but I would have cast Stana Katic as Laurie. She can act and she even looks like Carla Gugino, and gives me a better Laurie vibe than Malin Akerman ever did.

Anyway, I think it's a good film in all its incarnations, with the WCM cut being my favorite. But it's an 8/10 film for me, and not much else.

What I like about Gugino is she has this breezy sexiness to her. She would have been in her late 30's when the movie was made, and I feel she would have made for a better match against Wilson than Akerman.

Of course, this means you would have to find another actress/actresses to play Sally.

I don't think so. But then, look at how well realized the other characters are. Whatever you feel about the character, though, a better actress might have been able to elevate the material.

Honestly, the only improvement I would see from a better actress is much more convincing sobbing in the Mars scene, I think there's an essential problem with Laurie's character in how she's just nowhere near as interesting as the others.

It's true.
She's basically just a cog in the story.
A piece in the plot.
A plot device tbh.
