I don't know, I feel that scene adds a lot to the movie, along with the extended mars scene WHICH ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE in that cut.

I'd have to see the movie again for proper judgement.

I really loved the Hollis scene. It made it look so much better in the movie, it honestly made me really happy when I saw that.. Except that the last part when the music stops pisses me off. Overall one of the greatest scenes IMO.

I've got it! since they basically dropped the entire knot top plot anyway, might as well just replace one knot top segment with another - take out Laurie and Dan's alley fight and instead use hollis' death.

it's been a while so i'm not entirely sure, but isn't that scene kind of important in establishing the knot tops in the first place, and also for the Dan/Laurie relationship and reaction to violence etc?

I thought it was essential to their characters.

yeah, as i thought, you're taking away something that's important for the sake of replacing it with something that's a good scene, but not really important.

it's a moot point anyway, we got the directors cut, and we've seen it, it's not our problem what the theatrical cut was any more.

I think it punctuated how pathetic and pointless his death was in sharp contrast to what came immediately before with him valiantly fighting back.

Which is a good thing.

wouldnt work, as manhattan's voice-over goes along with their fight.

Keep the voice-over, drop the fight. I mean it's obvi a moot point that doesn't make it any less interesting for us to discuss how we would have done it if it were us. And personally, I never thought that scene added that much for the Dan/Laurie relationship. Maybe in the GN, but definitely not in the movie. They already have their whole deep discussion, the fight in the alley, while definitely underscoring the place of violence in their lives, isn't really necessary - especially because that gets underscored anyway when Dan can't get it up until they handle the tenement building and then totally get it on (with the boots on, DAMN) in Archie.

Here's the book trailer for the anthology I've got a story in. This is the easter egg laden tale I mentioned a few weeks ago. I mention this and provide the link because one of those eggs is in the trailer and folks here might recognise it.

Hit the link and keep a sharp eye out.

Was it the dude getting hit by the pitcher, he looked a bit like Rorschach. Or was it the Gunga Diner?

I agree it was essential to the characters. It definitely helped Laurie and Dan decide if they wanted that life or not.. Kinda. Idk lol.

I haven't found the Easter egg yet.

What is everyone's feelings about the Ultimate Cut? I myself think the DC was enough as the Black Freighter takes away from the film a little. In the comic it added to the story but as part of the movie it detracted from the pacing despite it being more accurate to the GN.
