So, it's a band? What's so funny about that?

actually, i´m pretty sure than dan thinks more of the dos passos novel "manhattan transfer"; the band takes their name after this. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Transfer_(novel)
in the novel, if i remember correctly, the "manhattan transfer" is a ferryboat that one of the protagonists uses to enter and leave new york.

obviously, either way it´s only funny when you are already familiar with the expression, so you can recognize it when dan uses it. it´s just a small clever pun, not a laugh-out joke.
same as, say, talking about some radical new dance style and calling it "apocalypso now".

Either way, it works. Thanks for the tip-off about the book!
I tend to think of the band first because I've choreographed to Manhattan Transfer music before, and the laughing fit I had from re-imagining the lyrics of "Boy From New York City" (delightful MT cover of the Ad Libs) in the context of Jon's origin scared my fiance'.

Even without the band or the book, if you are taking public transportation and need to end up in Manhattan, you might ask for a Manhattan transfer.

I wouldn't call this sort of thing an Easter Egg though... it's just an example of the subtle and rich layers of humor and meaning that Moore and Gibbons ladled into the telling. It isn't hidden... it's just that you can't get every layer without an enormous set of cultural experiences. Just think... there could be yet another layer or two on this tiny throwaway remark to be discovered... including some that Moore never intended.

More of a nod than an Easter Egg, but still very impressive.

Image by an 18th century artist Kitagawa Utamaro.
Look at the line of the man's eye and how it blends into his lover's hair.

Compare that to Chapter 7, page 28, panel 5. Dan and Laurie's post-coital snuggling.

Amazing.

XII.24.5-The blood steam goes past the hover craft pole and a stalagmite, along with the metal indents near the bottom of the pipe, completely representing the comedian's badge, which is the WATCHMEN symbol for a fallen hero.

Bit of a stretch-

V.Cover.

The top of the cross bones in relation to the pulsating parts of the puddle, along with the falling rain drop make the smiley shape

And this has been changed in the Motion Comic! Why? To avoid being called on the phone by lawyers from the estate of Charles Schulz? I would think this is "fair use", but warners just may not have felt like being hassled over it.

Took me a long time to read through this entire topic. Good work! It can be noted as well that "Watchmen", or "WM" for short, also has some fearful symmetry to the title: WM is sort of a reverse image of ityself, backwards and upside down, if you see what I mean. Ws and Ms, mirror image letters.

I've got some Beatles albums you all might want to take a look at, records to play backwards, I think you'll find some interesting things going on with "Paul"....

I'm stumped...do tell/show
