That phrase comes from the phrase "Here be dragons," which warns against the unexplored and unknown. It stems from the medieval practice of putting dragons or some other sort of sea monster on maps as a way of denoting unexplored or uncharted waters.

I always thought that the phrase was dumb as hell coming from an NYPD ESU member, but then I looked into the meaning behind it, and the line now seems very cool indeed. Of course, it was tweaked into "Here be tygers" for obvious reasons.

And coming from the same Here Be Dragons source, Here There Be Tygers is the title of a 1951 short story by Ray Bradbury.

Moore would of course go on to make another reference to scaly mythological beasties with the title to issue/chapter VII, the quote used for the header of this Dan-heavy installment also providing a relevant link in the next line from JOB Chap. 30 verses 29-30 of ...and a companion to owls.

I might be reaching here, but I always thought that this particular Rorschach face subtly resembled the patterns on a tiger's face. It makes sense here, as Rorschach, on the hunt, has successfully snuck up on his prey, Moloch.

The title of this issue, right underneath the panel here, is "Fearful Symmetry," and the first words of this issue's poem is "Tyger, Tyger, burning bright."

This is a great thread. After noticing the "surprise" face I always wanted to go back and see what other common faces Rorschach had but never got around to it. If I find any I'll be sure to post here.

I thought I'd post some pre-Blaire Roche pics of Rorschach. Here he is at the Crimebusters meeting. Note the fluid speech with articles, tilted head, shrugged shoulders, raised hands, and relatively simple blot pattern:

Image

Here he is approaching Gerald Grice's house. Very smooth, rounded blots:

Here he finds Blaire's torn blanket. Smooth simple blots:

Check him out deep in thought, hand on chin:

Now he sees the dogs eating Blaire's bones. He, and his face, are forever changed and more complex:

No it isn't, that's shortly after he first started out circa 1964. That's a Beatles poster on the wall behind him. Your point is taken, though.

I never noticed the tiger, or the way his blots were always round in the early days... Huh.

I always thought it was interesting that the blots only become asymmetrical when he gets kicked in the face... Apparently, the blots react to touch.

Also looks sort of like a "V".

I dont know if anyone has found this one.

When I was watching this scene, I was really weird to me how his face changes suddenly.

Then I realized that has he hacks into Grice, his face becomes "Dog's Head split in Half" Blot

Yeah.

The implication is there that not only did he kill her.... he did other things to her as well.

Yeah I know. :( What a sick person that guy was. It's like a case that happened here in Toronto back in 2003. Little girl was raped, killed, and cut up. It's sad that the guy might eventually be released again after 25 years. Apparently the guy who did that here in Toronto had a messed up childhood but it doesn't give him an excuse to do that....

Kinda makes you enjoy the retribution almost as much as Rorschach does.

Yeah....I mean I'm not someone who wishes death on people but if there's anything that makes me feel anywhere close....it's people who rape and kill kids. If I actually physically witnessed something like that, I might also lose it. I think a lot of people would actually.
