Someone do me a favor, go back and read issues 2 and 12, then get back to me on the following point,

The "creep" (as Laurie calls him) that sent Sally the Tiajuana comic book and keeps writing letters , asking for her costume. Could it be Dan????

I doubt it, but it's an interesting idea.

I seriously doubt Dan would be that disrespectful to someone who was a colleague of his hero and mentor.
I think Larry was the "creep." I've been married to (and divorced from) a controlling man, and the ones who are really obsessed will find any way possible to let you know they're still around.
Logically he would want the costume back because it, like Sally, is his creation. The Tijuana Bible is his way of taunting her for that one night with Eddie. Dumbass doesn't realize she no longer gives a damn.

I prefer to think it was genuinely just a fan of hers, some random dirty old man somewhere. While it's cool how much coincidence and connections exist in Watchmen, I don't like the idea of it descending into the realm of Star Wars fan-fiction where everybody is the son/daughter/cousin/mentor/protege of everybody else.

I think it stands to Sally's credit that she's got horny fans writing her love letters.

Dan isn't bold enough to do such a thing; he's far too polite and it would gravely offend Hollis! If Dan does ask, he'll ask politely in a letter, one of courtesy; if Sally said "no", Dan wouldn't push it any further. I believe Laurence's dead by that time though, so it's definitely not him. I tend to agree that it's an random obsessed fan, probably a stalker equal to the ones Madonna and Jodie Foster had!

I once suspected that it might have been the Comedian/Eddie Blake.

What if it's Hollis? He does call her out of the blue, he has obviously been nursing a crush. I know he seems like the perfect gentleman, but y'know, it's always the quiet ones...
and he is the kinda guy who collects and hoards stuff.

I think in the movie, the Comedian is an obvious choice for sending it. In the comic, it could be, though he seems less hung-up on Sally.

I agree with this. It really doesn't at all seem something Dan would do. He's not that creepy and he's not big on sneaky either. He has too much respect for Sally to send her porn. I mean, come on, who send their girlfriend's mum porn?!?
(Whether she stars in it or not.)

Maybe
Hollis could but, then again, he liked Sally but he hated Eddie so I don't think he'd be sending her pictures taunting her about an event or coupling that appauled him or that paint her as a slut. He's really not that much of a jerk or that insensitive.

I have no doubt he would have a collection of those books. I just don't think he would send them to Sally.

it´s definitley not dan. apart from this just not being his kind of action, his reaction at the end of the GN, when sally gives him the bible, it´s much too genuinely surprised and pleased. if he´d sent it to her in the first place, he´d feel called out and ashamed in that moment.
i agree that it´s likely just a random fan. the scene always felt to me mainly like an illustration of how sally dealt with her super heroine career and to highlight the differences between her and her daughter. i doubt there´s some hidden connection.

I've been there too, Fahnette. Those were the bad old days. :( Thankfully long gone.

But back to topic, I don't think it was Dan either though he did have one himself. I don't think he would have sent one to her though. Too disrespectful. I think it was just a random fan. I'm not so sure why they incluided that in the movie without tieing is to the end with Dan's admission that he had one too. Hmmm, I guess it was throwing a bone to the fans.

I wouldn't make too much out of this, either. Reads like a bit of a throwaway gag to me -- like Alan Moore, a very careful observer, making a little fun of obsessive fans, some of whom he no doubt encountered during his days as a more accessible cult "celebrity."

There are other in-jokes like this by Moore/Gibbons, such as the reference in the Black Freighter supplementary material about Max Shea's over-demanding , hyper-critical attitude toward his comic artists. I can just see Alan (writer of 120-page intricately detailed manuscripts) and Dave rolling around on the floor laughing at that one.

PS: Later edited to correct my lamentable misspelling of Moore's name. I don't want Rorschach coming over to break my fingers. "Hurm. Bad spelling must be punished. Slur on reputation."

That's an interesting perspective. I think it was just some random fan.

Dan has very romantic ideals about life-love-sex…I doubt that sort of thing would appeal to him.

Hollis is a very old fashioned kind of guy from a conservative upbringing- again not his style.

As for Laurence, fun idea but I think the fact that Sally received that kind of constant attention was a problem for him to begin with. I don’t think he would want to be anything like the guys who drooled over her in fan letters, even if he was her first drooling fan.

I really prefer the idea that it’s just some random fan. It says more about how female celebrities were and are seen.
