(From the "Baptism" thread):

Behold perhaps the single greatest panel of Watchmen.

Image

Note that Adrian has claimed victory in front of the mural of Alexander "solving" the Gordian Knot. That's cool in of itself. Mo(o)re importantly note that Adrian's outstretched hands fall over the image of objects going through his palms. Adrian is pictured in an almost joyful agony, with a band around his head as a crown of thorns would be. This is CLEARLY meant to depict Adrian as Jesus in that he has sacrificed himself for the benefit of mankind. All this on top of a round light resembling the smiley face with Adrian's arms pointing to 5 minutes to midnight. An EPIC panel.

Burgers, that panel has been discussed on the forum before i am sure and apparently Either alan moore or dave gibbons (or both) have insisted that swords through the hands shot was in fact pure coincidence and wasnt supposed to have religions connotations.

I call bullshit on that, though. I mean look at it. You cant make those sort of flukes!

I believe it was Gibbons who was recently asked if the comic had religious references, and he said he didn't believe so. I believe if either Moore or Gibbons were shown that specific panel, they would say it's an obvious reference. I'd follow that question with "Did you intend Ozy catching the bullet and leaving wounds in the center of both palms as another Jesus reference?"

That's something I didn't get. I'm about half way through the GN at the moment, how exactly did he catch a bullet? :?:

Dude! Avoid reading these threads if you haven't even finished the comic yet!!

The thing to remember is, pre-mass media, pop culture was the Bible. Christianity is so ingrained in our society (hence why many atheists foolishly see religious people as evil brainwashers) that one can easily make references without realising it. The ideas probably came to their heads and they wrote them in the story without it even occurring to them where the idea came from until later. I mean, you'd hardly expect either of them to go "Oh sweet! This would be an awesome time to put a Bible thing in!"...

Do you honestly think the many, many religious references, parallels, and subtext are all by accident and unintended? I'm surprised anyone even vaguely familiar with Watchmen or Alan Moore would think that. Christianity isn't the only religion referenced and used in the book, either.

Oh no, I'm not saying that - Gibbons' words seemed odd to me too...I just mean that it's easy to make references to Christianity without consciously intending it.

Ah, gotcha. Given how well you seem to understand the book I thought your post was rather odd. I should have figured I misunderstood what you said.

Well then, to answer your question, it's at the same point in the film - in Karnak, right near the end. Laurie shoots, Veidt turns and manages to pull off a hellava feat. Impossible? Well, maybe not for an ubermensch.

That's not the only difference between the book and movie, man. This board in general is spoiler heavy and everyone owes it to him/herself to read the book through once with no spoilers.

I personally thought this panel looked great with the fearful symmetry quote
