I've been saying "Veet".

Is it "Vayt"?

"Vite"?

I asked the same question in the "Casting Discussion: Matthew Goode as Ozymandias" thread. Apparently, it had been covered already at the Vivarium as well.

Thanks, I just found CLINT FLICKER's post:

CLINT FLICKER wrote:
Rhymes with fight, white, kite, smite, tight... 'Vight'.

In his heart-throb days of the 20s/30s, German born actor Conrad Veidt was billed with the legend that was Women Fight... For Conrad Veidt! He was actually born Weidt, but adopted the 'V' to ensure the correct phonetic pronunciation of his name in English.

He of course went on to appear in Casablanca; his earlier performance in 1928's silent The Man Who Laughs is acknowledged to be the inspiration behind the look of another comic book villian of some repute; Bob Kane recounted that "[The Joker] looks like Conrad Veidt — you know, the actor in The Man Who Laughs. (based on the novel by Victor Hugo.) [Writer] Bill Finger had a book with a photograph of Conrad Veidt and showed it to me and said, 'Here's The Joker'."

Sheer coincidence that years later, Moore would choose the very name connected with the birth of a previous master villain for his own character, one who would go on to perpetrate what he considers to be "...history's greatest practical joke."? Hmmm...

Thanks, CLINT!

Before this gets all "tom-ay-to, tom-ah-to" let me put the nail in this coffin right away...

It is pronounced vite like white. There was an actor named Conrad Veidt, same spelling, and that it how his name is pronounced.

Now move along... ;)
