Could be anyone, from the most major character to some guy in the background of one panel.

For my part (and yes, I know this is cheating somewhat), it's a tie between Laurie and Dan. There's nothing overly special about them, really. They're just ordinary people falling in love and working their way through extraordinary circumstances.

We have Veidt's grand scheme, we have Jon's god-like powers, Rorschach's psychosis and the Comedian's sadism.. but Dan and Laurie ground the story. I appreciate that.

So, how about you all?

Dr. Malcolm Long. I love this guy. I love his intelligence and his humanity. I love that he's in love with his wife and trying to understand her point of view while trying to hold on to his own and help her understand him. I love how important his marriage is to him and how important it is to him to contribute to the world... even in the face of armegeddon.

A great character.

Dr. Manhattan. I love the concept behind him. The only "real" super hero in a "too real" world. I liken him to Mr. Spock in Star Trek. Seeing humanity through "alien" eyes helps put what it means to be human in focus. And, we often learn how really "human" an un-human character can be. Sometimes more human than the rest of us.

Personally, I prefer Malcolm and Gloria at the end. Embracing each other, dead. They were bickering through the entire graphic novel, but in the face of World's End, they forgive each other.

Walter Kovacs

Definitely a product of his surroundings. I like the way he is kind of falling apart at the time of his hunt for the mask-killer. He looks like he kind of smells. Stains down his coat. His voice is devoid of emotion and raw.

Earlier, during his partnership with NightOwl during their heyday, he's sharper looking and his voice is more "normal".

And he has some truly great lines, delivered with a desert-dry sense of humour.

It's a tie between Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan. That's why I'm not voting. :P

Mr. Walter Kovacs, definitely.
He has an undying "passion" to "fight crime", but usually just punish the criminals for doing what they do. I also somewhat believe in his philosophy, best echoed in these two lines :

"For my own part, regret nothing. Have lived life, free from compromise… and step into the shadow now without complaint."

"There is good and there is evil, and evil must be punished. Even in the face of Armageddon I shall not compromise in this."

i like rorshach cos he has a funny name and a funny face.

...and ofcourse his undying hate for general humanity and the fact one man can strike such fear into the hearts of all criminals

I'm not surprised to see Rorschach leading in the poll. He's a no-compromise kinda character, Dirty Harry without the magnum. He behaves as we'll all like to, free to follow his own code with complete disregard for what anyone else thinks. More dangerous than a barrel of rattlesnakes and completely fearless.

He's also got a death wish the size of Siberia.

Dan's my favorite. A bit of a romantic, kinda introverted, trying to figure out what's going on but doesn't always see the big picture. Hmmm, sounds a bit like me

I'm sure many can guess who my favorite character would be. Rorshach. I love how unique he is from say Batman or Superman. He doesn't wear the classic "suit" and stands for a singular reason.

Veidt.

When we first discover Veidt, we think that he has sold himself out. He has toys, merchandise all bearing his name. He's the only character it seems who has exploited his name for monetary gain.

But he was using that to save humanity. The ending of Watchmen blew me away, it was everything I hoped for. In fact it was exactly how I envisioned some sort of world peace (lasting or not). Veidt figured it out, and it was something I pondered too. If an alien invasion occured, would the world unite? According to Watchmen it seemed so, but it was still uncertain how long it will last. Then there's the ambiguity of Rorschach's journal.

My second pick might be the Comedian. His dialouge in the first meeting of the Crimebusters is brilliant, and like the graphic novel says, he became a reflection of society and saw its cracks.

For those that chose Rorschach, what did the scene where he takes off his mask and is in tears at the end mean to you? Honestly my opinion was is that his life was over. He obsessed over finding out who plotted against the Comedian and who else was targeting masked heroes, and he found who did it and actually what benefit it did to society. That probably shook his foundation, and he really had no more direction on where to go. At least thats my perspective on it.

Welcome to the board. There is a thread that discusses this scene. It is in the Movie section, however. http://www.watchmencomicmovie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=238

The Comedian > all. YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE. He's h-fucking-core.

Rorsach is too, but the Comedian has more guns. -nods- Which makes him better.

My logic is undeniable.

I don't think DoomsdayClock would ban me from the forum even if he was strict about such things. We're tight (not like that, though. o.O)...We share a common love for deep space nine. :D
