When Dr. Manhattan is on Mars he thinks about how the fat man crushed Janey's watch & the subsequent events which created him.

His father wanted him to become a nuclear physicist after reading about Hiroshima bombing. One of the bomb used was nicknamed as "The Fat Man".

So it seems that the during two separate events "Fat Man" was respnsible for creation of Dr. Manhattan.

Also Dr. Manhattan talks about a Little Boy crying in the fair this was the nickname of the other second bomb.

I knew the name of the hiroshima bomb was "Fat Man" but this connection had never occurred to me, nice observation, and welcome to the forum.

The entity that the world will come to know as Dr Manhattan comes into being because Osterman enters the IF chamber to retrieve Janey's watch, which he has repaired.

It required repair because, at the amusement park, a fat man steps upon it.
Incidentally, Jon and Janey are "killing time" at the park, with all the connotations this term has with the themes of WATCHMEN, not least of which being the fact that this chain of events will inexorably lead to time itself "killing" Jon on account of it being a time-lock test vault that will entrap him.

In the frame immediately preceding the breaking of the watch, we see a little boy crying because he has let go of his balloon; this ends up being a moment frozen for all time, the balloon entering the sky above Jon and Janey as that photograph is taken and so giving us yet another 'hidden' smiley face with the image suggested by the position of the balloon, a tower and a section of ferris wheel.

'When the balloon goes up' - a common English language expression for the moment when things first start to go wrong, a sign of impending trouble... in this instance, denoting the moment when Osterman's fate is arguably sealed at the commencement of the inescapable countdown to Manhattan.

Fat Man and Little Boy - weapons devised and developed as a result of the efforts of a certain Manhattan Project.
