Both of the above points you quoted, by the way, have nothing to do whether Bush is and idiot, lied about his reasoning or any other fake motivation for starting a war with Iraq.
Veidt's plan involved the death of innocents to save future lives. Bush's war on Iraq was meant to prevent the countless future deaths of innocents as well - victim's of Saddam's regime, Al Queda, terrorism, etc.
Now, just becuase there are people who believe Bush and his reasons are bullshit, or a smokescreen to get cheap oil, are not moot to my comparison. Whether we like it or not, there are many intellegent people in the US that believe Bush's war was a smart pre-emptive move to prevent future deaths from terrorism. A valid plan to sacrifice the few to save many. You
don't believe that, I
don't believe that, maybe Bush
doesn't really believe that. The point is, there are
people who do
Veidt felt as strongly about his plan to prevent future tragic deaths as some right-wing republicans feel about the Iraq war. Just because they believe it, just because they've analyzed the facts (and maybe subconsciously ignored a few important facts they didn't wish to see) they may
have made the wrong choice.
Right wingers felt the US had
no choice whatsoever. Saddam's regime needed to be taken down. Terrorists had to be purged from Iraq. We needed to go to war with Iraq.
Again, I'm not saying Veidt is a moron or that he was sloppy. After Blake's map buring he got to thinking. Maybe his thinking was off
a bit. Just enough to convince him that his research showed him he had no other options. Maybe he had an intellectual bias. Maybe a more humanistic, compassionate and poetic man would have come to the same conclusion, but crafted a plan that would work without killing three million. It's possible, right?
Hopefully I've made my pont clear.
