The way I see it, it isn't exactly a BDSM mask.

He wore it to cover the scar, that's obvious. It's made of leather the same way the rest of his suit is, so it can protect his face. BUT it's also clown-themed!
To me, it was created as a balaclava (did I wrote that right?), a special-ops kind of head-wear. Eddie customized it, adding the details in the eyes, nose and mouth, wich are coloured and ressemble clown makeup. A throwback to his Minutemen costume. Of course, it also ressembled a gimp mask, as a reflection on the violent and sexually-harassing side of the Comedian, but it wasn't one.

Then, the guys on the prequels add a zip, and voilà. Now it IS a gimp mask.

...am I crazy?

-And yes, I kinda registered to write that down. But now that I'm on it, I'll post EVERYWHERE. -

Ah, crap. That's what I get for being a smartass.
I hope I could say it won't happen again... but it will. I frequently get those wrong. Sorry for that, I know how annoying it is. :(

Of course if they wanted to make it more creepy, they could have design it like this
