Guys, there's no need to discuss this. I'm sure an entire issue of the prequel will discuss the details of his mask choice. See! These unanswered questions need to be answered! Thank you, DC!

Indeed...not only to protect his face and identity but to show as user above pointed out, that he´s Amercia´s/the gouvernment´s "Slave".
But I do suspect him to be a bit kinky...I mean he may not be in it like HJ but he does like to beat the shit out of people..I mean such masks are not only used by the submissive, but can also be used by the doms.

That's true as a Dom myself, I wear a mask, and know some others Doms who wear masks too. If you think about it, The Comedian costume is actually kinda perfect for bdsm play.

I think it was present to hide the scar like others have said.

well yeah, that's why he wears a full face mask, I think the question now is why he chose a Gimp mask of all things.

Well, first, they're readily available in NYC. Second, what other pre-made options did he have? A halloween mask, a ski-mask? A Leather mask goes with his bad-ass persona, so he grabs one on 42nd street and he's done.

However, if his costume is custom made, why not make a custom mask? IMO it comes down to Eddie thinking its funny.

In certain panels of WATCHMEN, the mask in question does indeed appear to be fairly custom made:

The heavy stitching through the middle, front and back... the specialist fitted ear protectors with inbuilt holes to aid hearing... in some cases, the triangular nosepiece is coloured red and the distinct rectangular panels surrounding the eyes and mouth appear white; overall, the mask has a blue quality about it (possibly just to emphasise highlights upon the reflective leather surface), but could this tricolour combination also be designed to represent patriotism like other highly noticeable facets of The Comedian's costume?

Interesting to note that there's a very distinct single vertical strip appearing on the mask which bisects Blake's left eye... the opposite one to that of the smiley badge which is, of course, divided by Blake's very own blood.

Overall, I feel that the original depiction of the mask comes across as being far less... gimpy... than the version adorning the cover of BEFORE WATCHMEN COMEDIAN #1: most noticeably, this features an obvious mouth zipper which is patently (pun intended) absent in the original.

Either way, I don't believe that Blake's choice of headgear is in any way indicative of any submissiveness on his part, be it to his government/military paymasters (the America's bitch theory) or anything else for that matter. He is firmly of the belief that humans are inherently savage by nature and having chosen to become a mockery of so-called 'civilized' society as a result, the mask is symbolic of someone who has adopted the obvious role of an aggressor, an assaulter, an attacker... someone who wants to be in absolute control in any given situation and who actively exercises complete power and formidable dominance over those whom he regards as being weaker than himself and ultimately deserving of his tyranny. In short: it's a rapist's mask.

It's a good theory indeed.

As he did like to be a parody of society it could be that besides to hide his identity and protect his face, that he just hid his true self behind that mask. He could do what ever he wanted, without any consequences...He´s rough and tough...but does have a bit of softer side deep down, regarding Sally and so on. So as people tend to hide themself and often live a lie, so the Comedian did too

Anyway the leather mask fits well with his leather armor, as all ways thought that the comedian had the best costume of the bunch.

Yeah but at least you could wear the comedian's costume at fetish night. As doc you have to get painted in blue latex paint and have to wear a black thong.

The blueness isn't really his costume, but I think you could get away with going to a fetish party naked.
