It is obvious that the Comedian and Rorschach are most people's favourite characters. In your opinion, tell me why they are your favorite? Which attributes and qualities do they both possess that make them so appealing?

Note: do NOT say that they are awesome or cool. Thats a given. I want to your reasons.

but they are awesome/cool. that's why so many people like them the most.

of course, the bernies are secretly the best characters, but you only find that out if you read watchmen.

I'm more of a Dan Dreiberg guy myself, but okay. I'll bite.

The Comedian and Rorschach are alike in that they are very committed -- in mind, body, and soul -- to their unique brands of justice. They will stop at absolutely nothing to crack down on what they perceive to be evil, using whatever physical force is necessary, regardless of whatever objections anyone else may have. In fact, they both have a rare gift for calling the other characters out on their flaws without any sugar-coating at all, though they are either willfully ignorant or apathetic toward their own shortcomings.

They are also alike in that their binary perceptions of right and wrong cannot be reconciled with the larger ramifications of Veidt's plot, and that's ultimately what undoes them both.

That's my two cents' worth. Anyone else?

When characters are confident, unapologetic and single-minded they tend to come off as "cool" whether they are crazy or damaged in some way or other. I think that's why most folks cling to them as their favorite.

An old friend's words on Rorschach which, as ever, bear repeating:

He states his intention of reporting the landlady cheating on welfare. His sense of morality toward other people is brutal. But he doesn't hold himself up to the same light. He takes what he wants/needs. Small items, like a can of beans or a bottle of cologne.

He steals Dan's cologne. Dan is his friend. He doesn't ask or apologize; he just takes it because he very likely stinks like a walking septic tank and figures a dab of that a day will keep him out of the shower for weeks on end. All that wasted "bathing time" can be spent in seedy bars breaking the fingers of people who don't seem to have actually committed a crime just so he can take lazy shortcuts in his investigations.

He's crazier than a shithouse rat. We know that he will compromise his own morality for a can of beans but that he won't do it for the fate of mankind. He's totally mindfucked.

And that's why we love him. Perhaps, deep inside of us, the kid that first read comics and loved superheroes and responded to that sense of justice, adventure, and cool outfits and gadgets is still rattling around, disappointed in us because we did not actually don cape and mask and answer the call ourselves. And we look at Rorschach and see how it would have turned out. No x-ray vision. No batmobile. No magic lasso. No radiation-induced body-wide mutagenic transformations. THIS is how we would have ended up. Alone, jobless, transient, unable to even THINK about getting laid, no car, no money, nothing but a stinking outfit and a sense of morality that peeks out through the madness and the death wish of a person so removed from the society he "serves" that his relationship to it is competely antagonistic.

That kid in all of us looks at this... and perhaps forgives us for growing up and getting jobs and falling in love and having kids instead of going on patrol looking for random evil.

I think it's the way Rorschach and the Comedian both devoted their lives to fighting crime, as Dan said "Just give it up, trying to have a normal life". The way Rorschach responds, it clearly shows he either doesn't want to have a normal life or just stopped trying ages ago. How far they both go to bring Justice but do know their limits (I don't know about Rorschach, as the Comedian did die without telling anyone Adrian's secret), makes the readers like them. The Comedian is a sick man, and the reader has every right to hate him but we don't. I just think they're the two best characters in the story, as well the sickest but the greatest at the same time.

I do enjoy the other characters aswell but I think these two just stand out the most, though the Comedian has the least scenes, the whole book revolves around him.
