Inspired by the "Top 50 DC Characters" countdown at ComicBookResources.Com:

Quote:
The last scene with Rorschach is one of the best character scenes I’ve seen in super-hero comics. He tears off his mask (his “face”) as he’s goading Dr. Manhattan to kill him. He’s struggling with the fact that he can’t accept Veidt’s solution, but he can’t really assail it, either. Moore has said in interviews that he’s not sure why he had Rorschach remove the mask there, but that it just felt right. I’ve always thought that, since he finally faced a moral dilemma that he couldn’t resolve, he felt that he couldn’t be Rorschach any more, so he removed the mask. And, since Kovacs couldn’t be Rorschach, he got Manhattan to kill him. That was the end result of his black-and-white view of the world. It’s a heartbreaking scene - this merciless character can’t even extend mercy to himself.

I would go one step further.

It's one thing to dismiss the murder of so many millions of faceless, anonymous lives. It's quite another to kill someone face to face. Rorschach, of all people, would know this. I wonder if Rorschach -- as his final act on Earth -- wanted Doc Manhattan to experience what it's like to kill a living, thinking, emoting human being. As if to say "Take this murder, multiply it by a few million and then think about how you feel regarding what Veidt did."

What's your opinion on Rorschach's last stand?

And on a completely different note, what are some quirks and recurring motifs you've noticed about the mask patterns? Can we really assign a particular pattern to a particular mood?

Dr. Manhatten did already kill lots of humans "face to face". In his "crime fighting" days he apparently did it nonchalantly the same way he kills Rorschach, displayed on panel 4-14-2 (he does not act in self-defense, being invulnerable).

And how many people did he kill during his 2 Vietnam months, see panel 4-20-1? Hundreds? Thousands? Hundreds of Thousands?

Isn't it the first time Jon sees Kovacs' face? Wasn't he always in costume on their previous encounters?

Maybe Dr. Long's therapy helped Kovacs come to terms with his entire self. Peculiar that Rorschach should choose to commit suicide in the process. :(

Apparently Kovacs survived and lent his image to General Mills:

He did the right thing. Would have been interesting to see him stick around though.

Then again maybe it's better he didn't get added into the superman type of universe. That could have been bad.

Does anyone have this weird feeling that right after the movie there is going to be a fucking lot of costumes of this guy. Like there was from V for Vendetta.

Well, it's not like there aren't any Rorschach costumes out there already.

But if the Guy Fawkes masks sold like hotcakes after V for Vendetta, I can't wait to see how the Rorschach masks sell. Some of you might call that a sacrilege, but I call it hilarious.

That's oddly hilarious and mildly disturbing.

Huh.

"Well I always pictured him with a real raspy voice..." Well, personally, I always could hear him with a raspy voice, use of English aside...

Dustin Hoffman did something similar for "Little Big Man" when he played the 121 year old Jack Crabbe. He apparently screamed before each take to make his voice hoarse and raspy- like every 121 year old man I know! I could see Jackie doing something similar, as long as he keeps it consistent.

Could somebody please copy-paste this for those of us who don't want to register on IMDB?
