I was once in a forum where the admin and mods became more fascist every day! I hated that but one idea was okay i thought...
from time to time there was a huge user deletion policy where users who have not posted, and have been registered for at least a month or so, would be deleted. I thought 'good' for two reasons:
1) the forum can't boast about having a huge number of users when a vast proportion of them are inactive
2) users are encouraged to post, and new users know that putting in a fake email address won't work

just a thought? if it means that the forum wouldn't be as nice a place to be then forget it...

Some forums also delete threads that haven't been posted in for a while? What does everyone think about that, as well as deleting old users?

i wouldn't recommend that
sure, everything gets cluttered but its much better for a mod to lock an old topic so it doesn't get bumped

I wouldn't mind deleting old users (say a month or more inactive-maybe a bit longer), but I don't like the idea of old threads being deleted, unless it's a serious webpage memory issue. I like the fact that there is an archive of sorts, and that new members should be encouraged to look for old threads to answer their questions.

I know, a utopian ideal, but thought I'd throw my 2 pennies on the table (or pence, or quid, what have you...)

Same.

I seriously don't like the idea of getting my account deleted after a month because my job in the past has routinely required me to be away for far more than a month at a time. I've never had any problems getting back on after being away on any other forums or websites.

You've misunderstood Timmo. Of course a system like that would be terrible. I'm suggesting deleting inactive users with zero posts.

I'm hesitant to delete any threads or users from this forum unless its for some very egregious reason.

Ohhh, that's a bit different.

Though I would still be against it. You have to be logged in order for the board to accurately track what posts you've read and there may be people reading everyday that just don't want to post for whatever reason. Is there any reason to make it harder for them to do so?

Of course, back to the original point, any talk about the size of the userbase should probably be qualified as an "X number of active users" as opposed to simply the number of people with accounts.

You can't expect everyone to be active this early on in the production phase. Once we start seeing a bit more promotional wise, I'm sure the many that had the inactive accounts won't be inactive anymore.

I'm not on all the time, so I can't say about who's on with me or whatever, but anyone who has signed up and not posted may just be "lurking" from time to time.

From all my years on BBSs, I know there are some people who prefer reading posts. Especially on a board where the analytical barometer is usually set at dry and windy. ;)
