Surprised this hasn't been talked about on this forum at all. Even though, I really enjoy his work as a filmmaker, what he did to that girl was terrible and he should be punished for it. However, I think that inviting Polanski to a film festival and arresting him in the country the festival was to take place is a pretty crappy move (Or a really clever one, depending on where you look at it). I am baffled by the support given by so many of my favorite filmmakers, though but I don't understand if they are lashing out against the same thing I am lashing out or they just don't think he should be punished at all.

The way I understand it, MovieDude, is that Polanski has already plead guilty and spent time in Chino under psychiatric supervision in exchange for never having to go before a jury. A plea bargain, you see. Unfortunately, some showboating judge (now deceased, I believe) decided to go back on the plea bargain and haul Polanski's ass back into court so he could send Polanski to jail for another 50 years.

Being tried twice for the same crime is called "double jeopardy" and is expressly forbidden by the Bill of Rights. Polanski's plead guilty and he's done his time, leave the guy alone.

To be clear, I'm not saying that Polanski should've fled the country, but I understand.

To further Curiosity's point, the girl involved forgave Polanski over a decade ago, and was actually in the process of having the case thrown out when he was arrested.

Which, incredibly, is considered rape when you're not a big deal director.

Whatever your opinion about this, I think everyone in the world can agree that Woody Allen is not doing him any favors by coming to his defense.

I think yes what he did was wrong, but if the victim has forgiven him and he has done his time they should just leave him alone, I think it is completely unnecessary.

Rosemary's Baby is a really good film.

Not forgetting what is arguably the best noir ever made, Chinatown.
I hadn't heard about Polanski's controversy til this news hit, but I have a feeling it adds an extra layer to that famous ending.

It seems to me like somebody really has a grudge on this fellow, the victim forgave him, he paid his debt, and still, he was arrested, in my opinion this is turning into another episode of the show "Celebrities Don't Get Away With It"

Not a Polanski film but is anyone else reminded of A Clockwork Orange? Specifically the reaction of the prison officer and other characters to the idea of Alex going free.

PROOF I AM A HORRIBLE PERSON OR SOMETHING:

A musical Polanski originally directed and still produces, called Tanz der Vampire, is basically my biggest fandom outside of Watchmen. It's sort of my dream to play Magda, the secondary female lead in the show.

My first reaction to Polanski's arrest was "Thank GOD he's handed over the actual directing task to Cornelius Baltus so the show can keep running and I can keep trying to play Magda."
