Talk about irony.

Call me uninformed, but I had no idea we still used the Clock; I thought we replaced that with the color chart.

Anyway, thought this forum would be an obviously perfect place to discuss this :D Your thoughts?

Is there a specific reason why it was moved?

This might be a good spot to talk about this story I've heard about not too long ago. Some of you probably have already heard about it, some of you who haven't might be very surprised by it.

On January 25, 1995 the world almost faced nuclear war, by accident. The U.S and Norwegians had been testing a rocket off the cost of Norway. Russia was supposed to be notified of the launch, yet for whatever reason word did not get back to the right people. Russian radars picked up the rocket and because of its trajectory they concluded it was a nuclear missile launched from a nearby U.S nuclear sub. President Yeltsin was immediately notified and the nuclear briefcase was pulled out. Luckily radars were able to determine that the rocket was not headed towards Russia and the launch was likely a false alarm and there was no need to launch a counter attack.

It's scary to think that human error could result in total annihilation. I'd hate to be the guy who missed the memo on that one.

I've never heard of that but why am I not surprised?

(rhetorical question)

I googled it and apparently it's a secret until the actual moving. Which is being shown via live web feed.

Probably closer. More reasons for government spending.

Probably a more famous story is the Russian guy who noticed what appeared to be dozens of American missiles on his radar, but figured it was a fluke and didn't tell his superiors. It was, of course, a fluke, but if he had told his superiors we'd all be dead.

I think it was The Killing Joke where the Joker is talking about the world almost going into war over a flock of birds.

Or the song 99 Red Balloons is another example.

Oh hey, they actually moved it back one minute.

"Scientists this morning moved the minute hand on the Doomsday Clock back one minute to six minutes until midnight, citing a "hopeful state of world affairs" and reflecting a lesser threat of global annihilation."

I would have thought that they would move it closer.

Let's give Barack a second Peace Prize.

And still, this seems like it'd be bigger news. getting closer to or farther away from nuclear war seems pretty big news, but no all we hear about is Conan. And Haiti, but that is big news and deserves major coverage.

I guess them moving it back a minute last year was premature then? Or was the world really slightly further away from self destruction this time last year?

I wonder if it's possible to ever get it to 11pm?
Actually what is the baseline? 00:01am? Midday? 11pm?

I don't know, but the farthest its ever been was 11:43 p.m. I'm guessing total Utopia's time would be... time to get rid of the clock
