Last night at work a person who'd never seen or read watchmen was telling me that Watchmen wasn't a comic, it's a graphic novel... and I just didn't know the difference. He also cited 300 a book he's never read... but knows all about because he saw the movie.

Your face must have been a twisted expression of evil, with a slight hint of desire to kill :P !

Haha I'm going to hazard a guess that it was a bit more than a slight desire to kill. This girl in my history class went to a Noah's Ark themed fancy dress party as a butcher because she said she wasn't religious and a butcher is ironic.

Hmm...

Irreverent, sacrilegious and extremely clever. Insensitivity aside, I can't help but admire this girl just a little.

Well, I was about to make a face with more than a slight desire to kill, but then I remembered that there's no such thing as people who pretend like they are into things and knowledgeable of them without really knowing anything, so then it was completely okay... once I remembered I made this type of person up

Brace yourself, any moment now Lil' Bernie should come (for no reason at all!) to defend hipster rights once more :P !

The argument wasn't that those people didn't exist, it's that those people aren't what hipsters are.

Only because you are highlighting other aspects as more important, yet for Dr. B and myself, other aspects are more important.

Well, to me this is critical because they are trying so hard to be bleeding edge that they have to make up their fanboyism because they can't keep up with everything.

This.

Pretty sure in like every post in this thread I've mentioned people like that and how they aren't hipsters, they're just pretentious douchebags. They've been around since before the term "hipster" was being used.

Cue Feli pretty much ignoring this post and saying I'm "in love with some hipster chick".

They're not hipsters TO YOU, that's not how YOU define hipsters, the term hipster doesn't come to mind TO YOU.

How fucking hard can it be to understand that we've identified hipsters by different qualities ?

One can't say "Mr. Johann" is a Nazi if one doesn't mention that "Mr. Johann" is anti-semitic ?

LOLOLOL.

Fuck, it's actually kind of funny stubborn you are. But more annoying, actually.

People have been saying "I liked this band before they were popular" for a long fucking time buddy. People also say they're fans of something to fit in too. The sooner you realize that people just say stupid shit the faster you'll get over this "us vs them" mentality.

And trying to compare someone being a Nazi and someone being a hipster? I'm not even going to bother with such bullshit.

i am on neither side of the argument, but just because something is given a name, doesn't mean it didn't exist before it got named,

This, you act like that if it hadn't been named it wouldn't exist, but a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet... and hipsters by any other name would still be hispters.

That guy is what people would commonly call a hipster. When I see a picture of him I assume that he probably smokes Benson and Hedges and listens to Godspeed You Black Emperor and The Kooks, not that he pretends to like certain movies, books and comics.

Maybe the idea of hipster varies from place to place, because here they smoke american Spirits, listen to MCR... and there are people like this who pretend to like comics, movies, and books

why can't there be 2 different definitions for hipsters anyway?

in the UK we have chaps, and someone can look like a chav or act like a chav, or both, but all 3 types can be considered a "chav" what's wrong with looking like a hipster, or acting like a hipster, but both being hipsters?
